The Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek is one of the most breathtaking treks in Himachal Pradesh. With the Aadi Himani Chamunda Temple being the most famous attraction of the trekking. The trail is quite popular among devotees. The fables weaved by the locals for the presence of the temple are intriguing. 


As per local myths, Goddess Chamunda delivered the killing blow to two demons – Mund and Chand. Chamunda killed them from the mountain top by throwing massive boulders in their direction. It is believed that one of these boulders can still be seen atop the Shiva Temple, which is situated close to the already-present Chamunda Devi Temple, along the scenic Dharamshala Palampur state highway.

About the Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek:


The gradient of the Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek is moderately difficult. Apart from the ethereal beauty of nature around, the trek involves a relentless climb. The most relieving aspect is that the trail is well-defined and even partially paved.


When you are making the ascent, you will realize that the trek is not too hard and does not have any sudden drops. The slopes are relatively gentle and do not require technical skills to cross the path, making it an ideal attempt for even first-timers. 


The Aadi Himani Chamunda Temple is the main highlight of the Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek. It is located at an altitude of about 2810 meters and is surrounded by the lofty Dhauladhar Ranges.


There are two definite routes that you can opt for the trek. If you truly want to explore the gorgeous scenic views, then you can opt for the off-beaten path near the Jia Village. Another route is via Jadrangal, which is often adopted by the pilgrims. 

Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek Itinerary

Day 1
Journey to Kangra

Reach Kangra via different means of transportation.

The distance between Kangra and Chamunda is only 17 kilometres.

Then, you must have your dinner and head back to your room for an overnight stay.

Day 2
Reach Jia Village

Feel the tranquil atmosphere at the Aadi Himani Chamunda Temple

Get ready for the breathtaking view that the trek offers.

Sample the local delicacies for lunch. You can even pack some for dinner as the availability of food shops near the temple is scarce.

Reach Jia Village via bus to start the trek towards Himani Chamunda.

When you embark on the trail, you will find some stairs.

However, after some time, the slope becomes steeper. But, the magnificent view around will instil you with the determination to move ahead.

After 3-4 hours, you will reach the Aadi Himani Chamunda Temple. 

Take a look at the surroundings and admire the architectural prowess of the new temple. (The old temple was severely affected due to a fire a few years ago).

For the overnight stay, you can rest in the temple dormitories. 

You might face some issues as there is a distinct lack of light. It is advisable to carry torches, a power bank, matchsticks, and candles. 

Keep in mind that the temperature in this region is quite low. Pack essentials, but you can get blankets from the temple. They charge a mere 100 INR per blanket for the night. 

Have dinner and let your muscles rest for the descent journey the next day.

Day 3
Departure

Visit the Khargoshini Temple and continue the journey down

Admire the exquisite beauty of the rising sun amidst the Dhauladhar ranges.

Hike to the Khargoshini Temple takes about 2 hours. The trail is risky and requires the aid of an experienced guide. 

Soak in the beautiful views and come back to the Aadi Himani Chamunda Temple.

Then, continue the descent and reach the endpoint to go back home.

Know Before You Go for Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek

  • There is a scarcity of food and water for the most part of the Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek.
  • If the trek package does not include food, then you must make sure to carry the necessary foods.
  • You must also carry at least 10 liters of water to get rid of the overwhelming thirst that the exhaustion will inevitably bring.
  • Make sure that you are dressed according to the temperature. The weather gets chillier as you make the ascent.
  • Bring torches and other sources that can offer light. The dormitories at the top of the hill do not have any lighting.
