Bannerghatta National Park

Bannerghatta National Park, established in 1971,  is nature’s treasure trove and plays host to an incredible number of Indian Wildlife species, including rare and endangered species.

The stream Suvarnamukhi dances through the verdant park. The national park includes ten Reserve Forests of Anekal Range around Bangalore Forest Division. Predominantly, the undulating terrain is covered with moist deciduous teak forest.

Lions and tigers rescued over the years from circuses have been kept in an area called the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP).

Flora: Anogeissus latifolia, schleichera oleosa, terminalia tomentosa, sandal, neem, t.arjuna, grewia tilaefolia, santalum album, tamarind, chujjullu, shorea talura, emblica officinalis, vitex altissima, jalari, wrightia tinctoria, randia sp. zizphus sp. and zlbizzia sp.

Some of the dominant and common species of flora which can be found in this national park are considered to be bamboos dendrocalamus strictus, bauhinia purpurea, eucalyptus, peltphorum pterocarpum, samanea saman.

Fauna:: Elephant, leopard, gaur, fox, jackal, wild pig, sambar, sloth bear, chital, barking deer, spotted deer, common langur, porcupine, bonnet macaque and the har, wild boars, pangolin, huge monitor lizards, sloth bears, slender loris, pythons, cobras, Russell and kraits vipers roam freely over the park, lions and tigers.

Avian-Fauna 

There are around 200 species of birds found in the park, including cormorants, little green heron, grey heron, white ibis, tickell’s blue flycatcher, paradise flycatcher, white bellied drong, common grey hornbill, collared scop’s owl, spotted owlet,  eurasian eagle owl, mottled wood owl, brown fish owl, and more.

Major Attractions:

Safaris: The Grand Safari covers all the four sections of the park, showing you the herbivores and carnivorous—bison, deer, wild cows, then moving on to bears, lions, and finally the tigers. Other safaris offered by the forest department are Tiger and Lion safari, Elephant safari, and more. The Tiger and Lion safari takes you to that section of the park where the wild cats wander in abandon.

Butterfly Park:

The first Butterfly Park of India was established in 2006 at the Biological Park of Bannerghatta. Spread across a vicinity of about 7.5 acres, the park consists of butterfly conservatory, an audio-visual room and museum. The Park has been designed to shelter more than 20 different species of butterflies. Park’s habitat has an waterfall artificial prepared and a number of shrubs and plants to attract these winged beauties.Best Time to Visit: September to January.

Location: Bannerghatta National Park is situated 22 km south of Bangalore in the state of Karnataka.

Area: 101 sq km.

Route: There are a number of buses that ply from Bangalore to Bannerghatta National Park. You can also hire a private taxi to reach the national park in bannerghatta. The nearest airport and the nearest railhead are in Bangalore.
