Lepakshi has great history and grandeur behind it. It is a village located in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. Lepakshi means the village of the blinded eye. It gets its name from one of the treasurer who sacrificed his eye sight because he overused the money he received from the treasury making them almost bankrupt. It houses many temples that have carvings of the Vijaynagar style. The hills surrounding the village have temples of Raghunath, Sri Rama, Virabhadra and Durga. There is a tortoise shaped hill known as Kurma Saila that houses these temples of fantastic Brahmin architectural designs. On the hill in the village, there is a huge sculpture of Nandi Bull that is made out of a single granite stone. Even the Natya, Kalyana Mandaps and Wedding halls have murals painted all over them. The best time to visit this place will be between Jan and December.
