Vaser Valley Forestry Railway Overview

Explore some of Romania’s most amazing Carpathian forests with a tour of the Vaser Valley Forestry Railway. This area is considered one of the most beautiful places in Romania and it is also the only European railway that is still used for timber production. You can hop onto one of the several steam powered trains that are operated here and begin your tour from in Viseu de Sus.

Located in the Maramureș County, the Vaser Valley Forestry Railway is one of the top Romania attractions. It is also a great site to visit especially if you are a railway fan and looking for a nostalgic experience. You can take a trip on these steam trains that run regularly in the Wassertalbahn areas during the spring, summer, and autumn months.

This forestry railway is the last of the steam powered forest railways in the whole of Europe and it runs through sawmills at the town of Viseu de Sus cutting through the Vasser Valley all the way to the Ukrainian border. You can see for yourself how this traditional aspect of the country has been carefully protected as a rich Romanian cultural asset. It is used by the local population to transport raw wood here six days a week for further processing.
