St. Michael's Church Overview

St Michael's Church is the largest church in Munich and the seat of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising. The church is dedicated to Saint Michael, the Archangel, and was originally built in the Romanesque style in 1180-1240. The present Gothic structure dates from 1468-88. The church's interior is decorated with many paintings, sculptures and other works of art.

The nave has double rows of side chapels while the transepts each have a single row. There are also two towers, each containing six bells. The exterior of St Michael's Church is predominantly Gothic in style, although there are some Romanesque elements, such as the rose window above the main entrance.

The front façade is decorated with a number of statues, including those of Saints Peter and Paul, Saint Sebastian and Saint Dorothy. Above these is a large statue of Saint Michael slaying a dragon. The interior of St Michael's Church is very ornate, with much of the decoration dating from the 19th century.

The interior of St. Michael's Church is just as impressive as the exterior. The nave is decorated with beautiful frescoes, and the high altar is a magnificent work of art. Visitors can also explore the crypt, which contains the remains of some of Munich's most important citizens.
