Overview

About Kedarkantha:
Situated in the Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarkantha trekking in Uttarakhand is an amazing experience for those who enjoy spending time in nature. One of the often visited locations, the area’s natural beauty is complemented with quaint hamlets, unending lush green meadows, and some terrific sights of the towering Himalayan peaks.

The snaking trail to the 3,850 m tall summit goes through Govind National Park, which offers an exclusive glance of the Himalayan flora and fauna. With views of peaks like the Swargarohini, Banderpooch, Black, and Ranglana, the highlight of the trail is undoubtedly sunsets against the backdrop of impressive snow-capped mountains.

About the Kedarkantha trekking experience:
- Kedarkantha is a great trail for people looking at winter treks in the Himalayas. With the falling of winter snow, the landscapes take on a completely different and refreshing look.
- The trail is mostly through forest sections and meadows making it safe for walking even with lots of snow on the trail. What makes this trek special is the views of the Himalayan ranges that one gets along the trail and from the summit.
- In winters the sky is usually absolutely clear and the air clean ensuring fantastic views. At an altitude of around 3800 m/12500 feet, the summit (Kedarkantha) offers a good challenge to trekkers who are rewarded for the hard work with mesmerising views which are sure to stay with one, lifelong.
- Days are going to be warm and sunny but be prepared for cold nights with temperature always being sub-zero.
If luck is taking the trip with you then get ready to be enthralled by spotting wildlife of the region. There are leopards, wild cats, birds, bear, boars and the musk deer to be seen.
- There is also a policy of ‘Safety first’ and in line with this have chosen campsites which have back up Gujjar huts so just in case the weather gets really bad these huts can be used providing utmost safety.
- The trip begins with a beautiful drive from Dehradun to the remote village of Sankri in the Har-ki-Dun valley. This valley plays host to some of the most popular and enchanting treks in the Indian -Himalayas like Har-ki-Dun, Ruinsara Tal, Rupin Pass, Black peak etc, and is home to many a trekker during the popular summer trekking season.
- The trek starts with an easy climb to a beautiful water pond called Juda-ka-Talab, continue a short distance beyond the pond to our camping site for the night and get acclimatised to the conditions.
- By the end of the day, start seeing the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas including some peaks that stretch into the Himachal region.
- The next day starts with climbing and gaining altitude and trek through snowfields towards the base of Kedarkantha. The ease or difficulty of today’s hike will depend on the snow conditions, after great hiking day and camp at the base.
- The next day, you move as early as possible to try and get maximum time for the climb to the top.
- From the top get brilliant views from all around, the Himalayan ranges and the underlying valleys make quite a sight. Equally enjoyable as the views are going to be the sense of achievement that one experiences on climbing a snow-clad Himalayan mountain.
- Next day get down to Sankri early and celebrate the successful summit of the Kedar Kantha peak. From Sankri, drive down to Dehradun next day.

Today you will start your drive from Dehradun to reach Sankri and stop for lunch en route.

This is an enjoyable drive initially along the Yamuna and towards the latter part along the beautiful Tons River

There are very beautiful pine forest sections along the drive today. Upon reaching Sankri check into the scenically located campsite.

Sankri is paradise on earth, take an evening stroll in this beautiful hamlet to get our muscles charged for the trek to come

    Overnight stay at Sankri

  • Day 2 - Sankri to Juda ka Taalab (maximum altitude 9,000 ft.; trek - 4 to 5 hours)

After a delicious breakfast, set out on the hike

Today’s hike is a moderate one and moves through a beautiful forest section for the most part

Walk to Saur village and from there and start climbing up

Reach a small lake/pond called Juda-ka-Talab. This pond freezes into solid ice during winters.

Camp here for the night. Overnight stay at Juda – ka - Talab

  • Day 3 - Juda ka Talaab to Kedarkantha Base (maximum altitude 9,000 ft.; trek for 6 - 7 hrs)

Post breakfast begin the trek towards Kedar Kantha base, our destination for the day

The route is beautiful with vast fields of snow and patches of green in between them

The Kedar Kantha base campsite is an open snow ground surrounded by trees

This site has been chosen to keep in mind the safety aspect and is a wonderful place to set up a camp

Here you can also have Gujjar huts for safety back, in case the weather is harsh

From nearby and get fabulous views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch& Kalanag peaks

Overnight stay at the base camp of Kedarkantha

  • Day 4 - Kedarkantha Base Camp to Kedarkantha Peak (maximum 12,500 ft.; trek for 3 hrs to 4 hrs)

The distance to the summit is not long but is reasonably steep and walking on snow makes it more tiring and time-consuming

Depending upon the snow conditions select the best route leading to the summit

Start quite early at about 2 am in the morning. It will take anywhere between 7 to 8 hours to get to the summit.

Marvel at the astounding views from the summit. You get to see all the mountains of the Yamunotri and Gangotri range and also of Kinner Kailash range and other ranges in Himachal.

Also, there are some great views of the underlying valleys

After spending some time at the summit and start descending and walk all the way down to base camp

Overnight stay at the base of Kedarkantha

  • Day 5 - Kedarkantha Base Camp to Sankri (maximum altitude 9,000 ft.; trek for 6 - 7 hrs)

After a hot cup of tea and breakfast, start descending to Sankri

Continue on the trail and the views get really exciting as you get a glimpse of the tips of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, finally arriving at Sankri for the night

    Overnight stay at Sankri

  • Day 6 - Sankri to Dehradun (max altitude 9000 ft; drive - 6 to 7 hours)

My experience with the trek is just above the sky... I enjoyed a lot... Especially it's an beginners trek. We need to have basic fitness level to go for the trek. What's most best thing about the trek is our guides Mr. Surrender Rana, Mr.Ramesh who call themselves as Pahad ka Bacha and the team who filled us with delicious food and lots of care. They are so helpful through out the trek. Now coming to the trek everyday you will get to see different landscapes. The mightiness of the Majestic Himalayas is something which filled my heart with unbelievable experience. For people who would love to experience the nature with a decent amount of trek this is perfect. This trek could be a ignition start for the next treks we would like to go. Do go with the complete trek essentials what will be mentioned the list. For a good trekker the most important things are perfect shoes and proper clothing, this will make the trek easy. Experience the Majestic Himalayas, The secrets, wilderness, calm and blissfulness mountains give you!!..

This was my 1st solo trek which I was planning for years to gift myself when I get a job. The wait ended and also I realised that I had my Birthday coming on FEB which was a great time for me to spend my birthday in mountains. So I booked my trek and eagerly waited for the day to come. But, a few days before the trek was about to begin, I was a little worried about how will be the hospitality over there and will I be able to manage all alone. But, believe me this was the best decision of my entire life. The time I spent, the hospitality I received, the people I met there, and the happiness it all generated cannot be expressed in words. It was the best B-Day I have ever had in my life. This trek is highly recommended. Here are some pictures of me and the place for you to see. Cheers.

I made sured that my first solo should be to the land of gods.Once I reach Sankri village, where we had a night stay to acclamatize to the altitude.I felt the blankets where more colder than outside even we could see the Swargarohini peaks from the windows. It was a 9km trek one side, thought easier but nowhere it was a flat terrain. The whole trek was atleast 45% steep climb.By 7am early morning we bought all our equipments for the journey on rent and started our trek with immeasurable level of hope to reach the summit.I was very happy that a mallu family was also there with me to do this, along with their 11 year old child. We found tea points even in the forest area to refresh us only to know it wasnt just us.There I met a 61 year old man with so much aispiration to reach the summit.Point where I understood ,coming from south india just for the trek is nothing compared to the diligence they had.I felt so previlaged to be with such of crew with same level of desire to be at the top of a peak.A worthful emotion. After trekking for hours we reached Juda ka talab for our first stay in tents. It was my first experience to stay calm inside the sleeping bags. There we started sharing our own stories and became more closer friends but eventually slept.Next morning , we understood everybody heard what we were discussing whole night!!!Felt like I shouldnt have shared my love failure????.But knowing each other was part of the journey and we started the trek to base camp with our trek leader keep saying Chalo Chalo guys....Hearing it evertime helped to push ourself further.Reaching basecamp can be done by anyone with a diligent mindset but once seeing the mighty peak that you are going to climb next day it was scarier and you doubt yourself yet we were unwilling to giveup.Until it was dark, we were sitting here and there just to gaze at the polychromatic mountains next to us.You start seeing mountains in all colours once the sun set about to happen.Words can never express the joy you get out of it.Letting our body and mind to calm down is so difficult but the nature can help us handle it better. We started our trek to summit which is 4km one side at 3 am morining.I should say that part was a living in dream. We felt like we are moving through the Dark forest in Harrypotter series with blue shade showing everywhere and seeing animals footprints in the snow.It was so much to see and feel.

I would say that the Kedarkantha winter trek was one of the most fabulous trek for me. I had this one done last year November along with few of my friends. Walking over the thick blankets of snow was a new experience for me as it was my first Himalayan trek and that too in the winters. It was easy all through the way and the trek facilitators were extremely friendly and helpful. I think, Kedarkantha trekking is the best way to get acclimatise with the Himalayas.

We ate like pigs to stay energized for the trek, and all I remember is trudging up endless peaks after that, and not feeling tired for even one second as the landscape simply keeps you stunned! The Gangotri ranges are a whole new revelation and I recommend this trek for all young adventurers!

What an awesome trekking, “KEDARKANTHA” the name itself gives Goosebumps and a kind of thrill to achieve that peak. The chills in the air, the mountain steep, the sound of small water streams, the long trees and after so much of climbing efforts when you stand up there at 12,500 Feet above the sea level and take a deep breath, look around the mountains… That is so satisfying, it is just out of words. The guides Mr.Pravesh and Mr.Ramesh were outstanding, you just can’t expect so much from these guides. It is true that if you are mentally strong, only then reaching the peak (summiting) is possible and these guides were like energy boosters, one in the front of the troop and another at the back. They were always pushing us saying “sir ji aap karsakte ho”, “ye pahaad aapke sapno se bada nahi hai”, “Slow and steady”, “keep baby steps” they motivated us so much. The food was fresh, hygienic and tasty with humble serving. The tents were clean and good in condition, yes the blankets were not that good. I appreciate thrillophilia for having such an amazing team out there for making people experience the nature and making their dream come true of summiting the peak, yes there will always be space for improvement. At the end I would like to say me, Nakul Jain and one of my best friend Mr. Sudharm R. Mudalgi and his wife Priya enjoyed every minute of this camp, it gave us one of the best memories we ever had in life. I would like to share this link with you all readers where in you can see glimpse of our trip to KEDARKANTHA.
