The zoo is very popular for breeding many endangered species such as Asian elephants and Siberian tigers. The zoo also has a tropical aquarium and Eismeer polar section which is very popular among children. The tropical aquarium is one of the top attractions in the zoo where you can immerse yourself in the beautiful underwater world. The aquarium has over 350 species of marine animals which are living in over 8000 sq meters.

You can witness marine creatures like ring-tailed lemurs, free-flying African birds, Nile crocodiles, and venomous snakes. You can witness the beautiful panoramic window which has animals like sharks and rays. The Eismeer polar section has animals like polar bears, penguins, and fur seals. This zone has an amazing cooling technology that helps these arctic animals stay in an area that resembles their natural habitat.

The church's tower was again destroyed during the allied bombing raids on Hamburg which was called Operation Gomorrah in July 1943.
