Crow Castle Overview

Matsumoto Castle, also known as "Matsumoto-jo" in Japanese, is one of Japan's most iconic and well-preserved castles. It is located in the city of Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture. Here are some key points about Matsumoto Castle:

Matsumoto Castle, also known as the Crow Castle, is a National Treasure of Japan, located in the city of Matsumoto near Nagano Prefecture. It is one of the twelve surviving Tenshu in Japan. This black-moated castle was built during the late 16th century by Lord Yorishige Matsumoto. It was earlier known as Fukashi Castle and has five exterior stories but six internal floors. When exploring Japan tour packages, make sure to include a visit to Matsumoto Castle to experience its historical significance and architectural beauty.

It was named Crow Castle because of its black wooden structure. The castle’s wooden interior is an intricate maze of steep stairs and small corridors, specially built to confuse invaders. Its design features cleverly concealed passageways, trapdoors, openings for archers, and even a hidden floor to defend against potential intruders. The castle’s garden and park are adorned with cherry trees which are a must-see during the cherry blossom season.

This historic and significant palace is a fascinating attraction which takes you to Japan’s feudal past.
