Is passport required for Maldives?
Yes, a valid passport for six months is needed to enter the Maldives by all nationals. Tourist visas for thirty days are issued on arrival, and it is free of charge to all the visitors if they have valid travel documents.

Documents required for a tourist visa:

You should have an air ticket stating the date when you'll fly back from the Maldives.
Two clearly visible photographs of the applicant.
Copies of the booking of a hotel or any other accommodation that you have chosen for the trip.
An official passport that should be valid for more than six months from the date of your journey.
Proof that you're carrying enough financial budget while traveling. The authorities will examine the funds to ensure that you have enough money to cover your expenses during your stay.

Documents required for business visa:

A fully filled business visa application form with complete details of the applicant.
A certificate of qualification issued by the concerned organization that mentions the applicant's purpose of visit, his or her experience, duration and the exact place of stay in the country.
A document that can act as proof of the applicant's health insurance. 
A document stating the registration of the concerned organization or company.
Two copies of the biodata page of the passport.

Documents required for friend/family visa:

Two colored photographs of the applicant.
Air ticket that states the date of return from the country.
An invitation letter from the concerned friend or family members living in Maldives.
Proof that you have enough funds during your stay in the country.
A valid passport that won't expire for at least six months from your date of travel.
Proof of accommodation while you'll live in the country.

Visa Types:

- Tourist visa: 
If you're traveling to the Maldives for tourism purposes, then you will have to apply for a tourist visa. The tourist visa is issued by the Maldives government upon your arrival, and it is valid for a period of thirty days. Foreign tourists might get an extension of sixty days on request, but the application needs to be submitted two days before your tourist visa expires.

- Business visa: 
If you're traveling to the Maldives for business purposes, then you'll have to apply for a business visa. Your business should be approved prior to applying for a visa by the Maldives government authority.

- Family/friend visit visa: 
If you're traveling to the Maldives for visiting your family or friends, then you can apply for a friend/family visit visa.

Types and Cost:

A tourist visa that is issued on arrival for thirty days' time is free of charge, but you'll have to pay a fee of Rs 3350 in case of an extension of the visa for ninety days. 
You need to apply for Business Visa, and once it is approved and you get the intimation via email, you need to submit the original form to the Immigration Office at Male International Airport and pay a fee of Rs 3582(MVR750) an hour before you arrive in the country.
