The Museum’s foundation stone was laid on August 17, 1898 in the presence of Tsar Nicholas II with the name Alexander III Fine Arts Museum. The museum is split over three branches showcasing global artistic developments from ancient times to the present day in expositions numbering 700,000 works of art.
