The Museum of East Asian Art Overview

Dedicated to the arts and cultures of East and SouthEast Asia, the Museum of East Asian Art (MEAA) houses 2,000 different artefacts from Japan, China and Korea. It also hosts special exhibitions and events to enlighten the visitors about the Asian traditions, cuisines and art. There is a special gift shop also featuring articles inspired from the items in the museum.

The Museum of East Asian Art is one of the Bath places to visit for young scholars and students who wish to expand their knowledge about the history of East and South East Asian countries. The museum was established in 1993 in a restored Georgian townhouse by Brian McElney who got interested in the East Asian art while practising in Hong Kong. The majority of the artefacts you see today at MEAA are from his private collections which he had donated to create the Museum.

The permanent collection of exhibits like ceramic, bronze, jade and bamboo carvings are found in the two upper galleries of the museum. The Franklin Tsu gallery on the ground floor is used to host exhibitions and events that are organised with the purpose of encouraging better understanding of the Asian culture and art. You can also shop for exclusive gifts similar to the antiques and relics found in the museum at the MEAA gift shop.
