St Philip’s Church Overview

In Charleston, South Carolina, at 142 Church Street, there is a historic church called St. Philip's Church. According to its National Historic Landmark description, "This brick church with stucco was constructed in 1836 and has a massive tower created in the Wren-Gibbs style.

This design incorporates three Tuscan pedimented porticoes to create a structure of the highest caliber and refinement." It received the designation of National Historic Landmark and was included in the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1973.

The Anglican Church in North America's St. Philip's congregation is the oldest in the country south of Virginia. We are members of the "One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church," which is the dominant form of Christianity both historically and geographically. They endeavor to follow Jesus in a manner that is consistent with the Bible. The first European-American religious congregation in South Carolina was founded at St. Philip's in 1681.

On the present-day location of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, the first St. Philip's Church, a wooden structure, was erected between 1680 and 1681 near the intersection of Broad and Meeting streets. A replacement St. Philip's Church was started on Church Street a few blocks away after it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1710.
