Porta Palazzo Overview

Turin's cosmopolitan hub, Porta Palazzo is one of the greatest places to visit in Turin to mingle with locals and visitors from all walks of life. Every day, the largest market in all of Europe takes place in its central plaza. Items ranging from food and clothing to antiques and modern conveniences will be available. All five of your senses will be satiated by these markets

Among Europe's largest public markets, Turin's Porta Palazzo stands out as one of the best places to visit in Turin. Its heart is Piazza della Repubblica, the city's largest square at 51,300 square meters. The name comes from the Palatina o Comitale gate in Rome. Besides the designated area for local farmers, the market features a wide range of international vendors selling everything from food and wine to bizarre curios. Explore the Europe's largest and most crowded public market with our Europe holiday packages.

Many people connect Porta Palazzo to the Balon, which is not far away and was used as early as 1698 as a marketplace for livestock and farm produce. It's a one-of-a-kind spot, not unlike the Parisian flea market or London's Portobello Road in that you can discover both expensive antiques and inexpensive merchandise there. The valley (Valon and then Balon) produced by the terrain as it sloped towards the Dora may be the inspiration for Balon's name, or it may have come from a sphaeristerium written in the seventeenth century (ball game – Balon).
