History of Science Museum Overview

History of Science Museum (also known as The Museum of the History of Science) at the University of Oxford is the headquarters of Britain’s Science Museum and it is one of the prominent museums of science and technology in the world. It holds a collection of early scientific instruments and apparatus.

As the Lewis Evans collection, the History of Science Museum was established in 1924 and opened to the public a year later. The driving forces behind this Museum were Lewis Evans and Robert Gunther. The Museum has collections of sundials and early mathematical instruments, astrolabes, together with apparatus associated with chemistry, medicine, and communications. They call it a treasure trove of scientific wonders, ranging from Einstein’s equations to Marconi’s radio transmitter, by way of astrolabes and penicillin, it’s endlessly engrossing.

There are free tour guides available 2 days a week if you want to go for a private tour for a group of up to 15 people, charges applicable. Most travelers from across the world visit the museum independently to explore the part of downtown Oxford. It also attracts trespassers to admire its beauty. If you are visiting as a group of more than 8 people, you should book the tickets in advance.
