Cornmarket Street Overview

Cornmarket Street (also known as Corn market or The Corn) is the major crammed shopping street and the major pedestrian passage in Oxford, England. The corn market was semi- pedestrianized and given limited access in 1999 and it is sided by Magdalen Street in the south and Carfax in the north.

Located in between Board Street and The High Street, Corn Market Street akin to The High Street uses an ancient method of numbering shops starting from Carfax. The numbering of the shop in Corn Market starts from northwards on the east side to Broad Street and returns on the other side of the street back to Carfax. Located on the corner of Ship Street, 26-28 Cornmarket Street is a 14th-century timber-framed building.

The corn market belongs to Jesus College and was probed and revived in 1983. The largest department was opened at 50 Corn Market, Oxford in 1738 and the shop opened a new entrance on Broad Street in 1928 but still, the entrance on the Corn market is retained. The corn market has a joint value as the central shopping street of the town and the main tourist axis. You can find several street artists and entertainers in the corn market street as it is an important meeting place for them, hence marked as one of the best oxford places to visit.
