CITADEL OF QAITBAY

The Citadel of Qaitbay, also known as the Qaitbay Citadel, is a historic fortress located on the Mediterranean coast in Alexandria, Egypt. Built-in the 15th century by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay, it stands as a prominent example of Mamluk military architecture.

The citadel served as a defensive structure against potential invaders, positioned strategically to protect the city and its harbor. One of its notable features is its location on the site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, although the lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake in the 14th century. The fortress exhibits a blend of Islamic and Mediterranean architectural styles, with its imposing walls, towers, and courtyards. Visitors can explore the citadel's interior, which includes a mosque, a naval museum showcasing maritime history, and panoramic views of the sea and city from its elevated vantage points. Today, the Citadel of Qaitbay stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and continues to be a significant cultural and historical landmark in Alexandria.
