The Chateau d'if, an iconic fortress on a secluded island just a few minutes away from the shore of Marseille wasn’t a welcome architectural development at the time of its commissioning. The fort welcomed its first prisoners in the 16th century and continued to be a place of imprisonment till the 19th century.
