The flying distance from Gangtok to the centre of Kanchenjunga is 61.7 KM which can not be covered simply by taking one type of transportation. Instead you would have to reach Yuksom and then trek the rest of the distance of around 45 KM to the foothills of Kanchenjunga which is Lamuney. You can plan this entire trip according to your convenience by weighing various factors suiting your needs.
Cover this distance by Road
By Car:
Firstly you could consider travelling the entire distance of 120 KM by road. It would not take more than 5 hours to cover this distance if you are using a 4 wheeler. In case you are self driving then it will cost you between INR 1,000 to 1,5000 or if you plan to hire a private taxi then you might have to shell out between INR 5,000 to 6,500.
By Bus:
However, if you are looking for a cheaper option then you should consider opting for a shared jeep or state-run buses plying between the two destinations where you will have to pay between INR 100 to 500.
You must know that Gangtok and Yuksom share the same nearest airport and railway station. So the above mentioned way is the best way to reach Yuksom.
Trekking begins from Yuksom
From Yuksom, you can start your trekking expedition to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp which would be an expedition of 6 days. The first day will require you to cover the distance of 8 KM from Yuksom to Sachen which would take around 5-6 hours of your day.
The second day you start from Sachen to reach Tshoka after hiking the distance of 7 KM within a time frame of 4-6 hours. The third day you will head to Phedang the next day which will consume the 4 hours of your day and cover the next 6 KM of the trek.
The fourth day again you will cover 6 KM in about 3-4 hours and reach Dzongri. It is always advised to take a day’s break to relish upon the enchanting views of the surroundings. Excluding the rest day at Dzongri, the fifth day will require you to reach Thangshing in 5-6 hours followed by the next day to Goecha La and finally the last day to Lamuney.
You will be covering a distance of around 90 KM back and forth to reach the beautiful peak of Lumney. Lamuney lies in the foothills of Kanchenjunga situated in the national boundaries of India. It gives you the perfect views of the world’s third highest mountain peak of Kanchenjunga.
After enjoying the spectacular beauty of the surrounding mighty peaks, deep valleys and gushing rivers, it just takes 2 days to ascend the terrains of the mighty Kanchenjunga to reach back to Yuksom.
