Roman Theatre Overview

One of the best Malaga places to see, the Roman theatre in Malaga is the city's oldest structure and one of the few preserved Roman buildings in Andalusia. This area of the city centre of Malaga is one of the most historically significant and stunning locations in all of southern Spain because of its placement at the foot of the Alcazaba.

One of the few remaining Roman buildings in Andalusia is the Roman theatre in Malaga, which is also the city's oldest monument. One of the most historically significant and stunning places in southern Spain is located here, in the heart of Málaga, at the foot of the Alcazaba.

The theatre was constructed in the first century AD and used until the third century AD, when it was abandoned until the arrival of the Moors in Málaga in the eighth century. They had little regard for this formerly spectacular amusement area and appropriated it to obtain building materials for the Alcazaba.

It wasn't rediscovered until 1951, coincidentally during the building of an arts centre, and it took a complex and protracted restoration to get it ready for public viewing in 2011. It now hosts performances of plays and concerts and has an educational visitor centre.
