Pennsylvania State Capitol Overview

The Pennsylvania State Capitol, also known as the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex, is located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It serves as the seat of government for the state of Pennsylvania. Designed by architect Joseph Miller Huston in the Beaux-Arts style, the current capitol building was completed in 1906 and is considered one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the United States.

The Pennsylvania State Capitol features a grand dome inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, which rises above the city skyline. The interior is adorned with magnificent murals, sculptures, and intricate decorations crafted by notable artists of the time, including Violet Oakley and Edwin Austin Abbey.

The capitol building houses the chambers of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, as well as the offices of the Governor of Pennsylvania. It is open to the public for guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its historic halls, learn about Pennsylvania's government, and admire its architectural and artistic splendor. Additionally, the Capitol Complex encompasses other government buildings and monuments, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark in the state.
