KLEINE SCHANZE

Kleine Schanze, located in the heart of Bern, is a historic park that began as a military rampart in 1625. Adjacent to the Federal Palace, this park also serves as a monument to history and architecture. It features the Universal Postal Monument, inaugurated in 1909 to mark the Universal Postal Union's 25th anniversary.

Initially constructed for defence, the area was transformed into a public space in the 19th century. Its transformation in 1875 into a landscape park highlighted its strategic and scenic prominence. Today, Kleine Schanze is celebrated for its panoramic views of the city and the distant Alps, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and leisure.

How To Reach

Kleine Schanze is located in Taubenstrasse, around 3.5 kilometres from the city centre of Bern. 

• By Bus: Buses in Bern are a convenient way to reach Kleine Schanze. From the city centre, take bus lines 10, 19, or 12, and get off at Schanzenstrasse. This is the closest bus stop to the park, located 500 metres away. From here, you can reach the park in less than 5 minutes.  
• By Car: If driving, you can take the A6 motorway into Bern and follow signs for the city centre/Zentrum. Parking can be found at the Rathaus Parking which is a 5-minute walk from Kleine Schanze. Driving from the city centre takes about 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic.
• On Foot: Walking from Bern city centre to Kleine Schanze is highly feasible and pleasant. The total distance on foot is 900 metres, which takes 10 to 15 minutes. During the walk, you can also witness the historic parts of the city including the Bundeshaus (Federal Palace) and the Zytglogge clock tower.
