IGREJA DO CARMO

When it comes to Places to visit in Porto, you cannot miss visiting Igreja do Carmo which is the most famous church in the city. Igreja do Carmo is actually the name of two churches, Carmo and Carmelitas which are separated by the world’s thinnest house which is 1 meters wide. Admire the beautiful architecture of the churches and the sculptures of the prophets Elijah and Elisha carved on the facade.

It is said that this one-meter-wide house was actually built to keep the nuns and the monks separated. The house is also called the hidden house and has served as a residence in the past for artists and chaplains who worked at the church. The Carmelitas Church was built in the 17th century and was a part of the convent.

The church has amazing baroque and rococo-style architecture with wood carvings. Once you enter the church, you can visit the main altar and chapels located inside the church. You can also witness the beautiful classical facade with a bell tower and gilded interior. One of the interesting facts is that the church was also used as a barrack during the French invasion.
