About the Kareri Lake trek:

Located at an elevation of about 2,950 meters in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Kareri Lake is a freshwater lake rugged amidst mountains with greenery all around. Situated in the majestic Dhauladhar range, this glacial Kareri lake trek will take you through a journey of the most scenic views as it is home to lush pasturelands, exotic perennial flowers, and dense conifers. Kareri trek is also a favorite among the shutterbugs and nature lovers who can spend some time close to nature while clicking their best shots.

How to Reach:

By Air: Kangra Airport is the Nearest Airport just 17 Km from Dharamkot. You can get here by connecting flights from New Delhi and Chandigarh Airports.

By Train: The nearest railway station is at Kangra which is 27 Km from Dharamkot. It is connected to Pathankot Railway Station through a narrow-gauge line.

By Road: Overnight buses run from New Delhi to Mcleodganj from where Dharamkot is just 4 Km. You can also get buses to Mcleodganj from Shimla, Manali, Dehradun, Chandigarh, and Pathankot.

Day 1
Trek from Kareri village to Reoti | A Scenic Route Surrounded with Beautiful Snow-Capped Mountains
Welcome to Kareri, a quaint village nestled in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Begin your trek to the nearby Reoti campsite. Cross river streams and quaint wooden bridges, spot various native birds like Pheasants and Blue Magpies along the way. Upon reaching Reoti, surrounded by picturesque alpine grasslands, settle into your assigned tents, relish a delightful dinner, and unwind under the starry sky in the evening.
Activity: Trek to Reoti campsite from Kerari village
Starts at: 10:00 am

Trekking Distance: 6 km | Duration: 4-5 hours | Elevation: 8,000 ft.

  • Start your trek from Kareri to the Reoti campsite, which offers scenic views along the way. 
  • Walk through dense pine and broadleaf forests as you climb a steep ascent. 
  • Cross the Nyund nallah by walking on the bridge, and soon after, you'll come across a vast grassland alongside the nallah. 
  • Carry on towards the Reoti campsite for an overnight stay. 
  • In the evening, gather around the bonfire to share travel stories and enjoy dinner under the stars.

Day 2
Ascend to the Kareri Lake | Experience camping near the lake
Rise early to witness the stunning sunrise over the Himalayan ranges. After breakfast, embark on your trek to Kareri Lake. Walk through lush forests, quaint villages, and scenic meadows along the trail. Kareri Lake is a glacial wonder that transforms into a frozen spectacle during winter, with the surrounding meadows adorned in snow and mist. Capture the enchanting beauty of the lake and admire the sky as the sun sets. Check into your camps and relish a night under the starlit sky.

Trekking Distance: 7 km | Duration: 4-5 hrs | Elevation: 9,626 ft.

  • Begin your trek to Kareri Lake from the Reoti base camp.
  • Ascend steeply alongside the Nullah stream, crossing several bridges along the way.
  • Keep an eye out for Gaddi huts, traditional shelters built by the nomadic Gaddi shepherd tribe.
  • As you progress, the trail transitions from level ground to rugged mountain terrain.
  • Marvel at the serene beauty of Kareri Lake, its clear blue waters reflecting the surrounding landscape.
  • Pay a visit to the quaint Shiva temple located near the lake.

Day 3
Descend to Kareri Village | End of Adventure
Enjoy a tasty breakfast before starting your trek back to Kareri village. It'll take about 6 hours to get down. Take the same route and admire the wide meadows once more. It's mostly easy downhill, but there might be some steep parts. When you reach Kareri, your trek comes to an end.

Starts at: 10:00 am

Trekking Distance: 13 km | Duration: 5-6 hours | Elevation: 5,900 ft.

  • Start your trek from Kareri Lake back to Kareri village.
  • Descend along the same trail, which will be quicker than the ascent.
  • Watch your landscape getting change as you come near the village leaving the peaceful ambiance of the hills behind.
  • The trek comes to an end once you reach Kareri village.

Know Before You Go for Kareri Lake Trek

  • Climatic conditions in the high altitudes vary from the plains; take adequate time to get acclimatized to high altitudes.
  • It is recommended to carry enough warm clothes and the right kind of shoes for the trek.
  • Pay heed to the trek guides and instructors in order to enjoy a safe and sound trek.
  • Avoid consumption of alcohol or any other intoxicants during the trek.
  • Water is very precious, so conservation is appreciated.
  • Do not encourage trekking during the night unless it is a part of the itinerary and a guide is with you; this might lead to unforeseen mishaps.
  • Avoid using earphones during the trek; this might hinder your audibility.
  • Avoid using plastic bags and maintain the ecological balance of the destinations.
  • In case, the trek needs to be cancelled, the authorities should be informed beforehand.
  • Guidelines issued by the State-Government is to be followed. Social distancing to be maintained. Frequent hand sanitisation and use of mask recommended.
  • Please provide a valid ID at the time of check-in.
  • The exact location will be shared with you post-booking.
  • Professional guide(s) are available to ensure high safety and more information and personal attention which are necessary to appreciate a trek.
  • Neat and clean vehicle for the journey with experienced driver especially for hilly terrains available.
  • All the activities depend upon the weather.
  • Camping is very basic in nature. One must not expect luxuries. Electricity may be available only at a few locations.
  • Mobile & laptop charging points may/may not be available on campsites at a common point.
  • Any personal expenses, items of personal nature, meals not mentioned, etc. will not be in part of the package.
  • Carry dry snacks/food from home (you will save a lot of money). Carry water bottles with you, so that you can refill.
  • Keep your luggage minimum; the more you carry, the more you hassle.
  • Consult a physician before undertaking the Kareri trek. Carry basic medications and a first-aid kit during the trek.
  • The Kareri lake trekking takes place through an eco-friendly zone; do not encourage littering the local sites or campsites. Travellers littering may be fined.
  • Kareri Lake trek can be availed on every Weekend. Open even for Solo travelers as well. Send the inquiry for more available dates.
  • The management reserves all the right to modify the Kareri trek during any emergencies or natural calamities.
  • Permit charges are not included in the Kareri Lake trek package.
  • Children below the age of 7 years are not recommended for Kareri lake trek.
