Meghalaya has a way of making a six-day holiday feel much bigger than it actually is. For Samyami and her partner, Ankush R Bhandary, the journey brought together misty mountain roads, roaring waterfalls, forest trails, living root bridges and the impossibly clear waters of Dawki. Every destination had its own personality, giving the couple plenty of moments to explore, photograph and simply enjoy the scenery together.
Shillong Set the Mood
Their Meghalaya story began in Guwahati, where Samyami and Ankush joined their shared Tempo Traveller and started towards Shillong. The busy roads gradually gave way to winding mountain routes, thick greenery and cool weather. By the time they reached Shillong, the landscape already felt worlds away from where their journey had started.
They checked into their stay and had the evening to settle in before exploring the city. The following morning brought Elephant Falls and Mawkdok Dympep Viewpoint. At Elephant Falls, they watched water rush down a series of rocky steps surrounded by greenery. A little later, Mawkdok opened into sweeping views of the valleys and hills. It was a scenic introduction to the landscapes that would define the rest of their trip.
Cherrapunji Turned Up the Adventure
Cherrapunji brought a full day of exploring. Samyami and Ankush visited Seven Sisters Waterfalls, where streams cascade down the dramatic green cliffs, and NohKaLikai Falls, one of Meghalaya’s most striking natural sights. Mawsmai Cave brought a completely different experience as they made their way through its narrow limestone passages and naturally formed rock formations.
Arwah Caves added another adventurous stop, with the forest surroundings making the exploration feel even more exciting. The next morning, the couple headed towards Tyrna Village for the Nongriat trek. Around 3,500 steps took them deep into the forest before they reached the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge.
The bridge was easily one of those sights that makes you stop and take it all in. Created from the roots of living trees and strengthened over generations, it looks almost unreal when seen for the first time. After making the long descent, reaching the bridge gave Samyami and Ankush a memorable reward for all those steps.
Mawlynnong Led Them Towards Dawki
The road to Dawki brought another side of Meghalaya into view. Samyami and Ankush travelled through Mawlynnong before continuing towards Riwai Village, where they explored the Single Decker Living Root Bridge and saw the famous Balancing Rock. The experience offered them a closer look at the local way of life and the remarkable relationship between the Khasi communities and the surrounding forests.
Dawki brought a completely different atmosphere. The landscape opened up around the Umngot River, famous for its exceptionally clear water. After days filled with waterfalls, caves and trekking, the riverside setting gave the couple a chance to slow down and enjoy the scenery. The green hills surrounding the river made it one of the most picturesque stops of their journey.
One Last Waterfall Before Shillong
The journey back to Shillong came with one more beautiful stop at Krang Shuri Waterfalls. Surrounded by dense forest, the waterfall stood out with its striking blue-green water and rocky setting. Samyami and Ankush got another chance to enjoy Meghalaya’s signature combination of water, greenery and mountains before continuing towards Shillong.
Back in the city, they had some time to relax and explore at leisure. Their final morning took them towards Guwahati, with a stop at Kamakhya Temple before they continued towards the airport or railway station. In six days, the couple had travelled through some of Meghalaya’s most memorable landscapes, from Shillong’s hills and Cherrapunji’s waterfalls to the forests of Mawlynnong and the clear waters of Dawki.
