For Nandu Gopal and his partner, Leela Sireesha, their 6-day holiday to Meghalaya was the perfect canvas for romance. Seeking a break from their fast-paced routines, Nandu visualised a peaceful, intimate trip through the dramatic terrain of Northeast India. To bring this vision to life seamlessly, he partnered with Thrillophilia’s dedicated destination expert, Akshat Jain. Together, they mapped out a custom itinerary utilising a private sedan and comfortable standard hotels, giving the couple the freedom to explore at their own pace.
The romance of the hills welcomed them the moment they arrived in Guwahati on April 13, 2025. Their private driver greeted them warmly and steered the sedan up the winding, emerald-green roads toward Shillong. The crisp mountain air and the gentle rustle of pine trees set a beautifully tranquil mood for the days to come. Nandu later shared their experience in a glowing review:
"Good experience with thrillophilia,I would also like to plan my next trip with thrillophilia. They even tried to make changes in my iternary when I want to add some places even in the middle of the trip. I had a great experiences with thrillophilia to cherish the moments for my life."
The Journey to the Hills and Cherrapunji's Cascades
The next day, their first stop was the iconic Elephant Falls, a magnificent three-tiered waterfall enveloped by dense fern forests. Walking hand-in-hand down the stone steps, the couple watched the water cascade over dark rocks, enjoying the cool spray on their faces. Continuing their drive into Cherrapunji, they witnessed the majestic Seven Sisters Waterfalls streaming down raw limestone cliffs. A short distance away, the towering NohKaLikai Falls left them completely awestruck as it plunged 1,115 feet into a brilliant green pool below. To add a bit of adventure to their romantic escape, they explored the ancient limestone paths of Mawsmai and Arwah Caves. Navigating the narrow, torch-lit tunnels together felt like an exhilarating journey into a forgotten world before they checked into their Cherrapunji hotel for the night.
The Legend of Nongriat and Asia's Cleanest Village
The morning of April 15, 2025, brought the most physically challenging yet deeply rewarding chapter of their trip- the trek to the Nongriat Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Starting from Tyrna Village, Nandu and Leela descended 3,500 stone steps into a lush, tropical valley. Walking under a thick canopy of leaves, listening to distant forest birds, the trek felt entirely isolated from civilisation. Reaching the bottom, they stood in awe before the incredible double-decker bridge, a marvel of bio-engineering by the local Khasi tribes over generations.
On the following day, the couple traveled toward the border town of Dawki, stopping en route at Mawlynnong- Asia’s cleanest village. After a short trek to Riwai Village to view the Single Decker Living Root Bridge and the nearby Balancing Rock, they arrived at the legendary Umngot River in Dawki. Boarding a private wooden boat, they glided over water so perfectly clear that their boat appeared to be floating seamlessly on air, looking down at the smooth river pebbles below. They realised that they had taken the trip at the right time, as they could actually experience the true beauty of Dawki as they had always wanted to.
Turquoise Waters, Deep Canyons, and Sacred Blessings

The day after, they went to the village of Shnongpdeng, where the couple spent a thrilling morning enjoying optional water sports like kayaking and boating on the calm river. Leaving the border valleys, they drove back toward Shillong via the scenic Jowai route, stopping to visit the breathtaking Krang Shuri Waterfalls.
Later that afternoon, they hiked along the expansive ridges of Laitlum Canyon. Standing on the edge of the sweeping meadows, watching the afternoon fog slowly roll into the endless valleys below, Nandu and Leela shared a quiet, unforgettable moment watching the sunset.
The final morning of April 18, 2025, marked the conclusion of their mountain escape. After checking out of their Shillong hotel, they were driven back down to the plains of Guwahati to visit the revered Kamakhya Devi Temple. Standing within the historic, spiritual complex, they sought blessings for their shared future before their driver dropped them safely at the airport, bringing a magical romantic journey to a close.
