Planning a perfect family vacation is all about creating moments that linger in the heart long after the suitcases are unpacked. For 28-year-old Nithya Menon, this holiday was far more than a simple getaway- it was a beautifully planned surprise for her parents. Wanting to give them a peaceful escape from their daily routine, Nithya secretively worked behind the scenes with Thrillophilia’s expert destination expert, Tanushka Jain, to curate a flawless 7-day tour across the Northeast.

Reflecting on the profound impact of the experience, Nithya later wrote:

"I recently spent 7 incredible days in Meghalaya, and the experience was nothing short of magical. From the mist-covered hills and lush green landscapes to the living root bridges and vibrant local culture, every moment felt like a breath of fresh air. Exploring hidden waterfalls, walking through serene villages, and connecting with nature in its purest form made this trip unforgettable. Meghalaya truly lives up to its name—the "Abode of Clouds"—and I’m already dreaming of going back!"

Day 01 & 02 | Shillong and the Majestic Canyons

A peaceful escape where nature, rivers, and hills came together in perfect harmony

Location: Guwahati to Shillong Plateau

The journey started seamlessly as the family met their private chauffeur at the Guwahati airport and began their ascent toward Shillong. As the sedan wound its way up the smooth mountain roads, the humid plains gave way to cool breezes and pine-scented air, providing instant relief to Santosh and Susmitha. Arriving at their super deluxe hotel in the late afternoon, the family checked in and spent a relaxing evening unpacking, sipping warm local tea, and mentally preparing for the beautiful week ahead.

The second day was a whirlwind exploration of Shillong's unique mix of natural charm and colonial history, earning its title as the "Scotland of the East." They began with a peaceful morning stroll around the manicured banks of Ward’s Lake, followed by a drive to the towering Laitlum Canyons.

Day 03 | Cherrapunjee’s Deep Caverns and Great Falls

Location: Cherrapunjee (Sohra)

On the third morning, the Menons checked out of Shillong and traced the scenic ridge lines down toward Cherrapunjee. Their drive was punctuated by magnificent viewpoints, including the iconic Seven Sisters Waterfall and the dizzying drop of NohKaLikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in the country. The afternoon brought an exciting shift toward underground adventure as the family set out to explore the ancient Mawsmai and Arwah Caves. Walking through the safely lit limestone pathways, the sisters and parents marveled at the intricate stalactite and stalagmite formations carved by water over millions of years.

"Look closely at the rock faces, you can actually see tiny prehistoric fossils embedded right here in the limestone," Nithya pointed out, guiding her parents' flashlights along the cave walls. The sight was no less than captivating for the family.

Day 04 | Mawlynnong and the Glass Waters of Dawki

Meghalaya at its scenic best

Location: Riwai Village and the Umngot River

The fourth day of the itinerary was dedicated to exploring the legendary eco-conscious lifestyle of the local tribal communities. The family drove down to the border village of Mawlynnong, famously recognised across the continent as Asia's cleanest village. A short trek from the village brought them to Riwai, where they encountered the incredible Single Decker Living Root Bridge. "It's a beautiful partnership between human ingenuity and Mother Nature," Santosh noted as they carefully stepped across the suspension network.

Later that afternoon, the family arrived at the border town of Dawki to lay eyes on the iconic Umngot River. Boarding a traditional wooden longboat, they drifted out into the perfectly calm, crystal-clear waters where the riverbed was so visible that the boat appeared to be floating seamlessly on thin air.

Day 05-06 | The Pools of Jowai and Return to Guwahati

Location: Jowai and Shnongpdeng Route

Leaving the border regions behind on the fifth morning, the sedan turned northward, traveling through the lesser-explored, scenic region of Jowai. The main highlight of this route was a visit to the breathtaking Krang Shuri Waterfall, widely considered one of the most beautiful cascades in the entire country.

"This feels completely untouched by the outside world," Nithya said, taking a panoramic photo of her parents smiling against the bright blue backdrop. After that, they started on their drive to Shillong for their final evening in the hills.

On the sixth morning, the family bid a fond farewell to the misty hills of Meghalaya and descended back into the plains of Assam to explore the historical city of Guwahati. They spent their afternoon visiting the highly revered Kamakhya Devi Temple, one of the oldest and most significant centers of spiritual practice in India.

Following their temple visit, they explored the serene Umananda Temple, uniquely situated on the small Peacock Island right in the middle of the Brahmaputra River.

Nithya shared her experience on Trustpilot.
