What does it take to pull two city kids away from their screens and get them staring open-mouthed at the world? Sudeep Soni and his wife Priyanka figured out that the answer was a family road trip into the rugged, high-altitude desert of Spiti Valley. Together with their two boys, fourteen-year-old Poojan and ten-year-old Jaineel, they boarded an overnight bus from Delhi, watching the flat plains slowly roll up into the misty, winding slopes of Shimla.

The real magic kicked in the next morning as their shared Tempo Traveller climbed higher into the Kinnaur Valley toward Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border. Watching the clear Baspa River rush past dense pine forests, ten-year-old Jaineel tapped his older brother’s shoulder and pointed out the window. "Look at the river, Poojan! It looks completely clean, not like the water back home. Are those actual snow peaks right behind it?" He asked, his eyes wide with curiosity. Stopping for a hot meal at the famous 'Hindustan ka Aakhri Dhaba' at 3,500 meters, the adults felt the crisp mountain air melt away their city stress, while the kids began treating the massive geography as their personal classroom.

Spinning Wheels and Ancient Mysteries

As the family journeyed deeper from Chitkul to Nako, the landscape shifted dramatically from lush green valleys to stark, moon-like rock formations. This sudden change in biodiversity kept the adults completely hooked, while the kids hunted for answers at every stop. At the Nako Chango Gompa, the family stood before a 500-year-old prayer wheel crafted entirely from yak skin.

"Wait, so people have been spinning this exact wheel for five centuries?" Poojan muttered, carefully running his hand near the ancient artifact. "Imagine all the history this room has seen." The learning experience grew even deeper the next day when they drove down to Kaza, stopping at the Gue Monastery to see a real 500-year-old mummy, followed by a walk through the ancient, mud-brick walls of Tabo Monastery.

Throughout these challenging mountain passes, the family felt completely relaxed, enjoying every bit of the scenery. As Sudeep later noted in his review:

Postcards from the Clouds

Spiti gave us breathtaking views and unforgettable moments

The fifth day of the itinerary was the ultimate highlight for the Soni family. They woke up early in Kaza and headed straight for Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office at a staggering 4,440 meters. The kids excitedly scribbled on postcards to send back to their school friends.

"Dad, will the postman actually climb down this entire mountain just to deliver my card?" Jaineel laughed, carefully dropping his letter into the red mailbox. From there, they traveled to Komik- Asia’s highest village- and crossed the jaw-dropping Chicham Bridge, which hangs dramatically over a deep, plunging gorge. The sheer scale of the suspension bridge had the whole family holding their breath in awe.

Their journey back began with a drive toward Kalpa, stopping along the way to admire the incredible cliffside architecture of the 1,000-year-old Dhankar Monastery. As they left the dry, barren stretches of Spiti and re-entered the heavy green apple orchards of Kalpa, the contrast in nature was striking. The adults sat back, quietly soaking in the glorious views of the snow-capped Kinnaur Kailash range, while the kids talked nonstop about the wild yaks, unique birds, and high bridges they had experienced. By the time they boarded their return bus from Shimla back to Delhi, the family returned not just with photographs, but with a brand-new bond forged in the high Himalayas.

Why Sudeep and His Family Chose Thrillophilia

Organising a family vacation to a remote region like Spiti Valley comes with a unique set of challenges, especially when traveling with young kids. The extreme altitudes, rough terrain, and unpredictable mountain roads mean that safety, comfort, and proper pacing are non-negotiable. Sudeep and Priyanka needed a travel partner who could manage the intense logistics seamlessly so they could focus entirely on their children’s experience.

They chose Thrillophilia as they trusted our expertise in handling high-altitude group departures. Thanks to the meticulous planning of their Sales Owner, Hariom Khandelwal, the family was placed in the best hands possible. With Sharmaji handling the dangerous, winding mountain curves with absolute expertise, and their local guide, Jesme, keeping the children engaged with fascinating stories about Tibetan culture and hidden trails, the entire journey felt smooth and safe. Thrillophilia turned a challenging Himalayan terrain into a comfortable, deeply educational, and stress-free family adventure.
