Velgam Vehera Overview

The Velgam Vehera Buddhist Temple is another well-known Sri Lankan temple. Since its erection during the reign of King Devanampiyathissa (307–267 BC) in Kanniya, Trincomalee District, eastern Sri Lanka, this temple also known among Hindus as Natanar Kovil, has been an important destination of worship for both Sinhala and Tamil Buddhists.

Velgam Vehera is by far one of the best places to visit in Trincomalee, with its preserved vintage beauty. It is an ancient Buddhist site with a mix of modern day monastery which is ideal for history and art lovers. You can stroll through the trees and lawns spread all around the place if you are looking for some solace. It was built by King Devanamiyatissa, and still stands tall centuries later. People often come here to meditate as the atmosphere is very soothing and calm.
