Santa Justa Lift Overview

Santa Justa Lift, named after the convent near its location, is a beautiful neo-Gothic lift located in central Lisbon, Portugal. Opened back in 1899, it was one of the first monuments to be designated as a national monument. It stands at a height of about 45 metres and offers some of the best panoramic views of Lisbon and its surroundings. Visitors can ascend up the lift to get spectacular views of the whole city while they learn about its history and architecture.

The Santa Justa Lift is a Neo-Gothic elevator erected in 1902 and is one of Lisbon’s most recognizable landmarks. Located in the heart of downtown at Rua do Ouro, it towers 45 metres above ground, connecting its two parts via three levels with different panoramic views – simply breathtaking!

The lift was designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, an architecture student at École des Beaux-Arts, and built by Gustave Eiffel's company. The cabins are covered with intricate wrought iron walls which were inspired by Gothic Revival architecture. Riding on this lift will provide you with an unforgettable view! From its upper level you can observe the entirety of the historical downtown Lisbon area including some of its popular sites such as Rossio Square, Bairro Alto, Baixa Pombalina and Largo do Carmo Square. Moreover, admiring some remarkable sights from this high compared to street level is nothing short of mesmerising as you will be able to spot distant old port buildings and ancient churches too.

The top part makes an ideal place for mesmerising photographs due to its spectacular views from that angle as well as its beautiful green ornate garden located around it.
