High Mountain Lakes and Heritage Towns in Gangtok

The family's Himalayan journey began upon their arrival at Bagdogra Airport / NJP Railway Station. Moving along the winding mountain roads in their designated car, the family enjoyed scenic views of the turquoise Teesta River rushing through deep green valleys. After reaching Gangtok and checking into their hotel, they spent a pleasant leisure evening walking along MG Marg, exploring local craft shops, tasting authentic Sikkimese dishes, and enjoying the vibrant street atmosphere of the hill station.

The second morning was dedicated to an exciting high-altitude excursion into the Eastern Himalayas. Driving through mountain passes, the family visited the famous glaciated Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, situated at an altitude of nearly 12,400 feet. The quiet blue water mirrored the surrounding mountain slopes, providing a beautiful backdrop for family photos. They then visited Baba Mandir, a revered shrine honoring an Indian soldier whose spirit is believed to protect military personnel along the high-altitude border terrain, before returning to Gangtok for a cozy evening stay.

On the third day, the family set out on a scenic drive from Gangtok toward Darjeeling, famously known as the "Queen of the Hills." The road trip wound past emerald tea gardens, mist-covered pine valleys, and rolling hills with views of distant snow-capped peaks. Upon reaching Darjeeling and completing their hotel check-in, the family spent the afternoon taking a relaxed walk down Mall Road, browsing handmade wooden items, buying fresh local teas, and enjoying the crisp mountain air together.

Sunrise Views, Monastery Heritage, and Kalimpong Views

Day four started early at 4:00 AM with a drive up to Tiger Hill to watch the sunrise cast brilliant golden light across Mount Kanchenjunga and the surrounding mountain ranges. On their way back down, the family stopped at Batasia Loop to enjoy the 360-degree panoramic garden views around the Army Memorial and visited Ghoom Monastery to see its historic 15-foot statue of the Maitreya Buddha. After returning to their hotel for a warm breakfast, their sightseeing tour continued through the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Tenzing Rock, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (where they spotted endangered Red Pandas) sprawling tea estates, the Tibetan Refugee Center, and the peaceful Japanese Temple and Peace Pagoda.

On the fifth morning, the family traveled 55 kilometers across the hills to the quiet town of Kalimpong. After checking into their local hotel, they embarked on a delightful city tour covering the Science Center, Army Golf Course, and the vibrant flora at Pine View Nursery. They took in dramatic panoramic views of nature from both the Deolo and Durpin Dara viewpoints and visited the historic Zang Dhok Palri Phodang Monastery, a sacred site consecrated by the Dalai Lama. Following a restful overnight stay in Kalimpong, a private transfer brought the family back to NJP Station / Bagdogra Airport on the sixth morning, closing out a memorable, budget-friendly family holiday.
