Traversing the pine-scented highlands and mist-shrouded valleys of the Northeast with family requires a careful balance of dependable transportation and flexible planning. When Smita Shetty booked an eight-day Meghalaya escape for her group of four with us, having a dedicated private vehicle for journeying between Shillong, Cherrapunjee, and Dawki was the best decision in planning. Rather than managing daily driving logistics, the family spent their week marveling at ancient living root bridges, subterranean caves, and soaring waterfalls across the East Khasi Hills.

A successful road trip across rural terrains often comes down to the warmth and hospitality of the local ground support. Diksha Saini from our team at Thrillophilia coordinated the itinerary details and reservations, while local driver Krishna Roy went far beyond standard expectations to care for the family. By offering thoughtful local insights, maintaining a flexible attitude, and suggesting wonderful alternative spots whenever schedule changes arose, Krishna ensured that Smita and her companions felt supported.

Reflecting on their memorable family vacation and highlighting their driver's outstanding service, Smita shared her review:

"Our trip to Meghalaya was very good. Our driver, Krishna Roy, was especially excellent, friendly, and accommodating. He went out of his way to make our trip enjoyable and even took us to some wonderful places beyond the planned itinerary. Thanks to his support and flexibility, we had a memorable experience exploring Meghalaya. We truly appreciate his efforts and the excellent service provided throughout the trip."

Cascading Waterfalls, Sacred Trails, and Root Bridges

Smita explored Meghalaya’s lush forest trails and admired the cascading waterfalls, surrounded by dense greenery and the soothing sounds of nature

The eight-day holiday began with the family's arrival at Guwahati, where Krishna Roy met them for the pleasant drive up toward Shillong, stopping by the calm waters of Umiam Lake along the way. Moving onward to Cherrapunjee on the second day, the group explored the roaring three-tiered Wei Sawdong Falls, Elephant Falls, and the dramatic drop of Nohkalikai Falls. They also ventured inside the lit-up passages of Mawsmai and Arwah caves to view ancient plant and marine fossils embedded in the limestone walls.

Day three brought an unforgettable trekking adventure from Tyrna village down to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat. Walking through dense rainforest trails and crossing suspension bridges, the family marveled at the bio-engineering of the Khasi tribe before climbing the three thousand steps back to their vehicle. On the fourth day, when high peak-season demand at the David Scott Trail in Mawphlang led to a change in plans, Krishna stepped in smoothly. He guided the family to fantastic alternative scenic spots around Sohra, keeping their day engaging, relaxed, and full of wonderful views.

Crystal Rivers, Panoramic Canyons, and Heritage Towns

Smita enjoyed a peaceful walk through Meghalaya’s charming green pathways, surrounded by lush foliage, colourful flowers, and natural beauty

The second half of the trip focused on the tranquil water bodies and cultural heritage of East Meghalaya. Heading toward Dawki on the fifth day, the family visited Mawlynnong, recognized as Asia's cleanest village, to view the natural Balancing Rock and the living root bridge in nearby Riwai village. Upon reaching Shnongpdeng, they enjoyed a peaceful boat ride along the transparent waters of the Umngot River, where the riverbed was clearly visible through the clear water.

On day six, the family traveled toward Jowai to spend time by the turquoise natural pool of Krang Suri Waterfalls before returning to Shillong for their evening stay. The seventh day featured sweeping views from the edge of Laitlum Canyon, followed by cultural visits to the Don Bosco Museum, the historic Cathedral Church, and a pleasant evening walk around Ward's Lake and Police Bazaar. On the final morning, after a week filled with lush scenery and warm local hospitality, a comfortable transfer brought the family back to Guwahati for their return journey home.
