Sikkim has a way of making even a short holiday feel much longer. Parvathy ChandraBabu, Arun K B and Jeena Augustine spent five days travelling through Gangtok and Pelling, with every day bringing a different side of the mountains. Their trip had high-altitude lakes, quiet monasteries, waterfalls, scenic drives and some of the best views of Kanchenjunga.

Gangtok Was Their First Taste of the Himalayas

The group arrived at Bagdogra Airport and began the drive towards Gangtok. The road gradually left the busy plains behind, with greenery and winding mountain roads taking over the scenery. By the time they reached the city, the change was striking. They checked into The Regal and settled in for their first evening in Sikkim.

The next morning, Parvathy, Arun and Jeena headed towards Tsomgo Lake. The drive itself was beautiful, with the road climbing steadily through the mountains. At around 12,000 feet, the landscape around Tsomgo Lake felt completely different from Gangtok. The lake sat surrounded by rocky mountain slopes, with the weather constantly changing the way the scenery looked.

They spent time around the lake taking photographs and enjoying the chilly mountain air before continuing towards Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple. The shrine, located high in the Eastern Himalayas, is associated with the story of Baba Harbhajan Singh and is deeply respected by visitors and members of the Indian Army. The group explored the temple and took in the views surrounding it before making their way back to Gangtok.

The Road to Pelling Came With Its Own Highlights

The following morning brought a change of scenery as the group left Gangtok for Pelling. Their route passed through Namchi, where they stopped at Char Dham. The sprawling temple complex, set against the hills, gave them a chance to explore one of South Sikkim’s prominent pilgrimage sites before continuing their journey.

The road towards Pelling brought plenty of mountain views along the way. Hills appeared one behind another, while the occasional opening in the landscape revealed distant views of Kanchenjunga. The group reached Pelling later in the day and checked into Hotel Snow View, where the mountain setting made for a peaceful base for the next two nights.

Pelling Gave Them a Full Day of Exploring

Their day in Pelling was packed with some of the region’s most scenic attractions. The group began with the historic Rabdentse Ruins, the remains of the former capital of Sikkim. Walking through the forested paths leading to the ruins gave them a glimpse into the kingdom’s past, with old stone structures surrounded by thick greenery.

They then visited Pemayangtse Monastery, one of Sikkim’s oldest and most important monasteries. The peaceful surroundings and traditional Buddhist architecture offered a completely different experience from the ruins. The group had time to explore the monastery and enjoy the calm atmosphere before continuing their sightseeing.

Rimbi Waterfalls brought another change of pace. Water rushed down through the green landscape, creating a refreshing stop during their day of exploration. They also visited Khecheopalri Monastery before reaching Khecheopalri Lake, one of Sikkim’s most revered natural sites.

Surrounded by dense forest, the lake had a calm, almost secluded feel. Local beliefs associate it with wishes and consider it sacred, which added another layer of meaning to the visit. The group spent some quiet time around the lake before moving on to another highlight of Pelling — the Sky Walk.

Standing on the glass-floored Sky Walk, they could look down towards the landscape below while the mountains stretched out ahead. After spending days surrounded by Sikkim’s hills, seeing the scenery from this height offered a completely different perspective.

Sikkim Was About More Than the Famous Viewpoints

For Parvathy, Arun and Jeena, some of the best parts of the trip came from simply being on the road. The route between Gangtok and Pelling passed through small mountain settlements, forests and winding stretches where the landscape kept changing. One moment they were looking across a deep valley, and a few minutes later the road was surrounded by dense greenery.

The contrast between their experiences made the five days feel full. Tsomgo Lake brought them close to Sikkim’s high-altitude landscape. Baba Mandir added history and local stories. Namchi brought them to an important pilgrimage site. Pelling combined monasteries, waterfalls, ruins, forests and mountain views in a single day.

Their final morning marked the end of the journey as they travelled back towards Bagdogra Airport/NJP Station. By then, the group had covered a good stretch of Sikkim and experienced several sides of the state, from the busy mountain atmosphere of Gangtok to the quieter landscapes of Pelling.
