When Nikhil Chaurasia planned this family getaway, he expected beautiful waterfalls, green valleys, and mountain roads. What he didn't expect was how quickly one highlight would be replaced by another. Every morning brought a completely different landscape, and every drive seemed to end somewhere even more beautiful than the last.
Over six days, Nikhil and his family travelled through Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and back again, exploring waterfalls, caves, living root bridges, peaceful villages, and rivers so clear they almost looked unreal. Somewhere between long drives, scenic treks, and quiet moments in the hills, Meghalaya became another unforgettable memory on their bucket list.
They Chased Waterfalls Across the Hills of Meghalaya
The journey began with a scenic drive from Guwahati to Shillong. Along the way, Nikhil and his family stopped at the peaceful Umiam Lake before settling into the relaxed pace of Meghalaya's capital. It was a gentle introduction before the adventure truly began.
The following day, they travelled towards Cherrapunji, and almost immediately the scenery changed. They paused at Elephant Falls before continuing deeper into the hills, where every stop seemed more dramatic than the last. They stood before the towering NohKaLikai Falls, admired the Seven Sisters Waterfall stretching across the cliffs, and explored the fascinating limestone formations inside Mawsmai and Arwah Caves.
Instead of rushing through one attraction after another, the itinerary gave them enough time to enjoy every place. They wandered through caves, stopped at viewpoints hidden beneath drifting clouds, and watched the landscape transform with every kilometre they covered.
The Trek That Became the Highlight of the Journey
Some experiences stay with you much longer than photographs ever can.
For Nikhil, that moment arrived when they began the trek from Tyrna Village to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Thousands of stone steps led them through dense forests, across small streams, and deeper into one of Meghalaya's most unique landscapes.
The walk demanded effort, but every section revealed something new. The forest grew quieter, the streams became louder, and the anticipation kept building until they finally reached the remarkable bridge woven entirely from the living roots of rubber trees.
The adventure continued the next day as they travelled towards Dawki. On the way, they explored Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, visited the famous Single Decker Living Root Bridge in Riwai Village, and stopped beside the fascinating Balancing Rock before continuing their journey.
Each destination introduced a different side of Meghalaya, making every day feel completely different from the previous one.
Crystal-Clear Rivers, Hidden Valleys & The Perfect Ending
By the time they reached Dawki, another unforgettable experience was waiting.
Standing beside the Umngot River, Nikhil finally saw what makes this place so famous. The water was so clear that the boats appeared to float in mid-air, creating one of those rare views that almost seemed impossible until you witnessed them yourself.
They spent time around Shnongpdeng, enjoying the peaceful riverside atmosphere before beginning the drive back towards Shillong. Even the return journey refused to slow down.
They stopped at the stunning Krang Shuri Waterfalls, where brilliant blue water flowed through dense greenery, before ending the day at Laitlum Canyon. Standing high above the valley, they watched layers of rolling hills disappear into the clouds, a fitting final view before the journey came to an end.
After six days on the road, Meghalaya had shown them waterfalls, forests, caves, rivers, mountain trails, and villages unlike anywhere else in India.
