There is a particular kind of trip that only a family can pull off, the kind where a grandfather's need for a slow morning has to sit comfortably beside a five year old's need to run somewhere, anywhere, right now. That was the trip Chayan Dwivedi set out to plan when he booked a week in Kerala for six people spanning three generations: himself, his wife Richa, his parents Yogesh and Harsha, and his children Yashvi and Jayan.

Mountain Hues, as Chayan put it, had rooms that were "nice and clean," even if the property itself sat some seventeen kilometres outside town.

For a household carrying both toddlers and elderly parents, a spotless, comfortable room at the end of a long sightseeing day tends to matter more than a short walk into the market. That trade quietly worked in the family's favour.

Alleppey: Backwaters, a Houseboat, and a Small Surprise

From the hills, the road led down to water. Few Kerala tour itineraries feel complete without a night adrift on the backwaters, and the Dwivedis spent theirs aboard a houseboat easing through Alleppey's narrow green canals. 

Evenings on the backwaters have their own rhythm, fishermen casting nets in the last light, kitchen smoke curling up from other houseboats, the occasional temple bell drifting across from the shore. By the time dinner was served, the canals had gone dark and quiet, lit only by the boat's own lanterns, which is one of the best experiences one desires to have on a Kerala trip.

Kovalam: The Beach at the Doorstep

By the time the Dwivedis reached Kovalam, five days of hill roads and gentle water crossings lay behind them, and this is where, by every measure in Chayan's review, the trip found its softest landing. 

Ocean Bay Resort sat close enough to the shore to reach on foot, the rooms were clean, and the food, once again, held up well. Ending on a beach just steps from their rooms gave the family the slow, easy finish a long trip like this deserves.

The Man Behind the Wheel

Through all of it, one person stayed constant: Mr. Tahir, behind the wheel of the family's Ertiga for all seven days. Every memorable Kerala road trip eventually becomes, in part, a story about the driver, and Chayan made sure to name his. He praised both the vehicle and the man driving it, noting that Tahir communicated easily in Hindi throughout the journey. 

For a group travelling with young children on one end and elderly parents on the other, that small, steady comfort likely did more for the trip's rhythm than any single sightseeing stop.
