Borasu Pass Trek Highlights

About the Borasu Pass Trek:

Making for one of the popular passes in the higher altitude regions of Baspa and Tons, Borasu is an amazing trek offering varied landscapes. The beautiful Borasu Pass trek passes through charming villages, unadulterated forests, rolling meadows, and meandering rivers, letting the hikers soak in the majesty of nature at each step. The Borasu Pass trekking trail snakes through the old verdant valleys of Maninda lakeside and Har ki Dun, offering the trekkers enchanting views of breathtaking wild alpine flora and lush grasslands. The virgin woods of Govind National Park also lure the trekkers with their charm, while they hike this part of the trek. The final day of the Borasu Pass trekking leads you to the charming Chitkul Village, on the way to which you can enjoy the mesmerizing views of milky streams, snow-covered peaks, green meadows, and blue skies.

How to Reach Dehradun:

You can reach Dehradun by Air/Railway and Road. The nearest railway station is the Dehradun junction, which is well connected to major cities in northern India, primarily New Delhi. Jolly Grant Airport serves Dehradun domestically, with regular flights coming in from many major cities in India. Regular bus services also prevail to and fro Dehradun through an excellent roadway network.


Borasu Pass Trek Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive at Dehradun and Transfer to Sankri

Trekking Distance: 0 Kms.

Your trip starts with the driver picking you up from the Railway station/Bus stand and helping you transfer from Dehradun to Sankri. You will be traveling for approximately 9 hours to reach Sankri for an overnight stay in a guest house.

Transfer in Bolero, Sumo Gold or similar
  • The driver will pick you up from the Railway station/Bus stand and will help you transfer from Dehradun to Sankri for an overnight stay.
Activity: Travel to Sankri
  • Purola is the last big settlement on the route with a large market. So, it is recommended that the trekkers buy anything they might have missed out by Purola itself. It also is the last village where most of the mobile networks work.
  • The road after Purola winds through a beautiful pine forest. We arrive at Sankri in the early evening.
  • It is a small village with a central market lined with a few shops. The village has numerous apple orchards which are harvested starting in late summer.
Day 2
Transfer from Sankri to Taluka and trek to Seema/Osla

Trekking Distance: 12 Kms.

After breakfast, you'll board an SUV and drive through a bumpy forest road, and multiple streams. After an hour, we'll reach Taluka, a small village with a few shops from where you will trek to Seema, the first campsite, and stay overnight in the camp.

Transfer in Bolero, Sumo Gold or similar
  • After checking out from your Homestay/Guest House, the driver will pick you up and drop you at a small village ‘Taluka’.
Activity: Start your trek from Taluka
  • The SUV will drop you at Taluka and this is where you start trekking to the first campsite at Seema/Osla.
  • The trail passes through the stony path with the fragrance of cedar trees and you’ll be walking close to the river Supin gushing through rapids.
  • After a few hours of walking past the villages of Datmer and Gangad, we continue our trek till we reach the secluded campsite at Seema/Osla.
Day 3
Trek from Seema/Osla to Har ki Dun

Trekking Distance: 16 Kms.

Today's trek takes you through the legendary Har ki Dun Valley, also known as the "Valley of Gods." Brace yourself for breathtaking vistas and serene meadows teeming with life.

Activity: Trek to Har ki Dun
  • Begin your trek from Seema or Osla, depending on your previous camping location.
  • Ascend gradually through the verdant meadows, feeling the gentle breeze against your face.
  • Witness panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Swargarohini and Hata.
  • Enter the enchanting Har ki Dun Valley, carpeted with wildflowers and dotted with streams.
  • Reach Har ki Dun, your campsite for the night, and set up your tent near the gushing Yaru River.
  • Explore the valley in the afternoon, discovering hidden waterfalls and ancient temples.
  • Enjoy a bonfire under the starry sky, listening to local legends and stories of the valley.
Day 4
Trek from Har ki Dun to Ratha Tho

Trekking Distance: 5 km

Early in the morning, leaving the enchanting Har ki Dun behind, this day involves a moderate trek to Ratha Tho, offering mesmerizing views and an opportunity to acclimatize to higher altitudes.

Activity: Trek to Ratha Tho
  • Traverse gently sloping meadows adorned with wildflowers and buzzing with butterflies.
  • Cross the Yaru River over a picturesque wooden bridge, capturing the scenic landscape.
  • Witness the imposing peaks of Swargarohini and Hata rising above the valley in their majestic glory.
  • Ascend gradually towards Ratha Tho, a campsite nestled at the foot of the Borasu Glacier.
  • Reach Ratha Tho and set up camp amidst the stunning scenery.
  • Spend the afternoon acclimatizing to the higher altitude by taking short walks and relaxing.
  • Share stories and experiences with your fellow adventurers around a crackling bonfire.
Day 5
Trek from Ratha Tho to Borasu Pass Base Camp

Trekking Distance: 3 km

This challenging day involves scaling steep and rocky terrain to reach the Borasu Pass Base Camp, a crucial step before conquering the ultimate summit.

Activity: Trek to Borasu Pass Base Camp
  • Rise early and fuel up with a nutritious breakfast, preparing for the demanding climb ahead.
  • Begin your trek on a well-defined trail that ascends through rocky slopes.
  • Tackle the terrain cautiously, feeling the adrenaline rush with each step.
  • Breathe in the crisp mountain air and admire the awe-inspiring vistas unfolding around you.
  • Reach the Borasu Pass Base Camp, situated at an altitude of 4,730 meters, and feel a sense of accomplishment.
  • Witness breathtaking sunsets, painting the mountains in hues of gold and crimson.

Day 6
Trek from Borasu Pass Base Camp to Bonga via Borasu Pass

Trekking Distance: 10 km

The culmination of your efforts arrives! Today, you'll conquer the mighty Borasu Pass, experiencing unparalleled views and the ultimate sense of achievement.

Activity: Trek to Bonga via Borasu Pass
  • Begin your ascent towards the Borasu Pass, following the trail marked with cairns.
  • Navigate steep snow slopes and traverse icy ridges as you, witness awe-inspiring panoramic views of the Himalayas, stretching as far as the eye can see.
  • Soak in the breathtaking 360-degree vistas of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and valleys below.
  • Descending from the pass, follow the trail towards Bonga Camp, nestled amidst meadows and glaciers.
  • Relax and unwind in the scenic campsite, relishing the sense of accomplishment.

Day 7
Trek from Bonga to Chitkul

Trekking Distance: 15 Kms.

On this day, you will enjoy an easy hike to Chitkul, passing through dense forest areas and breathtaking flower fields. Once you reach the village of Chitkul. Check in to homestay for your deserved comfortable overnight stay.

Activity: Trek to Chitkul
  • Witness the changing landscapes as you descend towards the valley floor.
  • Reach the Baspa River, a roaring stream gushing through the valley.
  • Enter the quaint village of Chitkul, also known as the "Last Village in India."
  • Immerse yourself in the charm of traditional wooden houses and vibrant local culture.

Deaparture from Chitkul

Trekking Distance: 0 Kms.

This bittersweet day marks the end of your epic Borasu Pass Trek. Leaving the charm of Chitkul behind, from here you can easily take a private or public transport service to reach Shimla for your onward journey.


Activity: Departure
  • Savor a leisurely breakfast, bidding farewell to the warmth of your homestay and the serenity of the village.
  • Board your chosen transport (taxi, bus, etc.) for the journey back to Shimla, marking the start of your mountain descent.
