Ward's Lake Overview

Ward’s Lake is one of the most beautiful and scenic attractions in Shillong. Located in the heart of the city, near Police Bazar, the lake is easily accessible and quite popular amongst tourists. 

It is also known as Pollock’s Lake (Nan Polok) because of a popular engineer during the pre-independence era. The lake is almost 100 years old and was planned by the then Commissioner of Assam, Sir William Ward, and the construction was done by Colonel Hopkins in the year 1894. There is an enchanting wooden bridge in the middle of the lake where you can watch the fishes swim and swirl in the water, and you can also feed them from the bridge. The lake is also popular for boating in the lake and also has a cute cafeteria with a variety of refreshments and beverages.

Ward’s Lake is located in the heart of Shillong City. It is easily reachable from any part of the city because of its central location.

By Car: Ward’s Lake is just 1.3 km from Police Bazar Center Point. Drive to the lake via Soso Tham Road car and reach the destination in 5 to 6 minutes.

By Bus: Ask a local about the bus number going to Ward’s Lake and take that bus to reach the destination. Public transport is an affordable option.

By Foot: You can easily walk up to Ward’s Lake from Police Bazar Center Point. It is just 1.3 km from the center point and it will take approximately 10 minutes to reach the site.

Best Time To Visit

Ward’s Lake is a beautiful site to visit all year round. The timings of the lake are 8:30 am to 5:30 pm from November to February, and 8:30 am to 7 pm from March to October. The entry fee is Rs. 10 for adults and Rs. 5 for children and senior citizens. It takes approximately 1 to 2 hours to enjoy the attraction.

Best Season to Visit: Ward’s Lake is more pristine in June and July because of the favourable weather and pleasant vibes. So, the peak summer season is the best time to visit Ward’s Lake. 

Best Day of the Week: Weekdays are usually less crowded and offer a more tranquil experience at the lake. However, you can pick your ideal day to visit Ward’s Lake as per your itinerary and preference.

Best Time of the Day: Early mornings and late afternoons are the best time to visit the lake as it is more pleasant and cool. Mid-day can be a bit hotter and weary to go boating and strolling around the lake.
