Shashur Monastery Overview

One of the best places to visit in Keylong, the name of Shashur Monastery translates into ‘blue pines’. This is owed to the presence of Blue Pine around the monastery, giving it a rather calm and serene setting amidst the hills of the Lahaul Valley. This monastery was built in the 17th century, on the spot of a previously existing structure. The then king of Bhutan sent a representative here, who oversaw the building.

Famous for housing large Thangka paintings, with a few being taller than fifteen feet, alongside wall paintings displaying all 84 deities of Buddhism, the Shashur Monastery is visited by tourists and pilgrims alike, all throughout the year; with the best time to visit falling during the month of July.
