NAMGYAL TSEMO MONASTERY

Built by King Tashi Namgyal around 1430, in the early years of the 15th century, the Namgyal Monastery is amongst the most significant Buddhist shrines in Ladakh. While the main structure of the gompa is in ruins as of today, one of the main attractions of this monastery is a solid gold-plated idol of Maitreya Buddha, which has a height equivalent to three Storeys. 

Perched atop a mountain behind the Leh Palace, the monastery offers unprecedented views of the surrounding countryside, including that of the Indus River and the Zanskar ranges. You can also find numerous beautiful idols of Manjushri and Amalekites, along with several ancient manuscripts and paintings inside the gompa.

How To Reach

Namgyal Monastery is located around 4.6 kilometres from Leh. Accessible via the Khardung La Road, you can avail taxis or rent private cars to get to the monastery from Leh. The entire journey takes around 15 to 30 minutes.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the Namgyal Monastery is from May to September, when the region experiences clear weather conditions. The roads leading to the monastery remain covered in snow and therefore, are cut off from the rest of the region during the rest of the year.
