Mudumalai National Park Overview

Mudumalai National Park and Bandipur National Park are like two sides of the same coin. Separated by the border, Bandipur Park lies in Karnataka while the neighbouring, Mudumalai lies in the Kongu Nadu region of Tamil Nadu. The area is rich with rare species that include 50 types of fish, 34 species of reptiles, 266 species of birds, and 55 types of mammals. 

Some of the rare wildlife you’ll find here are vultures, Bengal Tigers, Indian Leopards and golden jackals. The flora includes dense tropical forests, exotic climbers and creepers, bamboo trees, Indian rosewood and much more! Best Time to visit: The most ideal time to visit this park is from February to June.

Timings: The opening hours for visitors is from 7:00 am to 9:00 am in the morning and from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the evenings.

Distance from Wayanad: The distance between the two places is approximately 90 kilometres.

The Mudumalai national park happens to reside on the northwestern side of the great Nilgiri hills. It has been one of the most important wildlife corridors of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The national park is flourished with many other adjoining forests and wildlife reserves like the Mukurthi National Park, Silent Valley National Park, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Bandipur National Park.

The Mudumalai National Park is also referred to as the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. There are more than 48 tigers in the park and they are allowed to roam freely inside the park without any restriction. The National Park is not only a house to the elephants and tigers, but it is also home to countless other endangered wildlife species like amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds.

As per the reports, more than 13% of the total mammal species in India is present in the Mudumalai National Park and more than 8% of birds find their home in the National Park. The National park has got a perfect balanced ecosystem. The National Park also houses various medicinal as well as rare plant species like Pongamia glabra, Mangifera indica, Dalbergia latifoli, Terminalia arjuna, Syzygium cumini and the bamboo.

How To Reach



The Mudumalai National park is situated at a distance of 41 Km from the city centre. The national park is well connected by road to all the major cities nearby. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the park. If you want to visit the Mudumalai National park, you can travel by means of public transport of Tamil Nadu or else you can also book a cab that you drop you at the National Park without any hop off and hop on in between the journey. If you are new to this place, it would be better that you hire a rental cab to the National Park.

1. Location:

The Mudumalai National Park is located in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu. The national park is about 150 km from Coimbatore. 

2. Timings:

The national park remains open from 6 AM in the morning to 6 PM in the evening. However, safari tours are available from 7 AM to 10 AM and again from 3 PM to 6 PM. 

3. Entry Fee:

In order to get an entry into the national park, you need to pay INR 30 and if you want to carry your camera and camcorders inside the park, you need to pay an additional amount of INR 53 and INR 315 respectively. 

4. Distance from city centre:

The national park is about 41 km far from the city centre.

You can hire taxis from Ooty to directly reach Mudumalai National Park without any issue. 

1. If you love nighttime wildlife safari, then it would be just awesome to go through the forests of Masinagudi and Bandipur. Before going on a forest tour, you should have proper permission from the authorities. It is highly recommended at all times to hire professional drivers for night time safari. 

2. You should keep your group refrained from creating any disturbance inside the national park in order to keep you safe from the deadly wildlife creatures. 

3. You can come down to an amazing place all over the year and relish in a jungle safari, road safari and elephant safari. 

4. You should also consider visiting some of the nearby waterfalls and villages to get a glimpse of the countryside environment.
