La Puerta Del Sol Overview

Located near the Plaza Mayor, La Puerta Del Sol is one of the most famous squares in the city with some of the most famous attractions. It has a semi-circular shape and is known as one of the busiest streets in the city. Located on the original city gates, the square's original construction was carried out between 1854 and 1860.

The La Puerta Del Sol, square is also home to one of the most iconic symbols in the city called the El Oso y El Madroño which is a 20-ton statue of a bear trying to reach fruits from a tree. Another famous attraction at the square is the clock of Puerta del Sol which is one of the main spots during New Year's eve. The square also is known for the stone slab on the payment also called kilometer zero. This slab is the starting point of r Spain‘s six national roads. and was placed in 1950. Apart from this, the square is also home to the Mariblanca statue, which was placed in appreciation of King Carlos III to improve the city. You can also visit the Church of San Ginés which is located just around the corner of the square and is one of the oldest religious sites in Madrid.
