Cathedral Square Overview
Locally called merely as the Square, Cathedral Square is the geographical hub and core of Christchurch, New Zealand, where the Anglican cathedral of the region, Christ Church Cathedral, is situated. Cathedral Square has gone through many changes and evolved considerably over the years.

In the earlier years, its appearance, feel and purpose changed from a muddy thoroughfare towards a more structured, pedestrian-friendly venue for social and civic meetings to be held. Though it is referred to as a "square", its shape is essential to that of a cross.

Highlights:

- It was originally intended to be called Ridley Square.
- It has a lot of buildings and statues that are registered as heritage items with Heritage New Zealand.
