Buddha Dordenma Overview

Perched atop Thimphu's hills, the Buddha Dordenma stands as a majestic 51-metre gold giant, visible across the valley. Housing 125,000 smaller Buddhas, is a symbol of peace in the city. Surrounded by the tranquil Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, this iconic statue blends spiritual serenity with breathtaking views. 

One of the largest Buddha statues in the world, Buddha Dordenma is a masterpiece of architectural wonder. The massive bronze statue is more than 50 meters in height and is gilded in gold. Apart from this it also houses 125,000 other Buddha statues that are placed surrounding the Buddha Dordenma statue. Sitting royally atop a great meditation hall, this Buddha statue exudes peace and tranquillity, so make sure to include on your Bhutan trip.

The project has been believed to be prophesized as early as eight century in a sacred treasure kept by Guru Padmasambhava. It is a representation of manifestation of human faith and everlasting peace and happiness for all human beings.

How To Reach

By Road: Travelling to Buddha Dordenma by road from the city centre of Thimphu provides a straightforward yet scenic route. The statue is located 4.9 kilometres from Thimphu city centre.

By Bus:  Local bus services from Thimphu city centre to Kuenselphodrang Nature Park are available, providing a budget-friendly option. The 4.9-kilometre journey might take 20 to 30 minutes.

By Car:  For those preferring a more comfortable journey, hiring a taxi or driving a rented car is a viable option. The drive takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It follows the main road out of Thimphu towards the nature park via Gaki Lam Southwest Road. 

On Foot: For those situated in Thimphu and seeking a bit of adventure, trekking to Buddha Dordenma is a rewarding experience. The hike from the city centre takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Buddha Dordenma is during the pleasant months of October to December when the weather is cool and clear, offering stunning views of the colossal statue and the surrounding landscapes. It's advisable to avoid the monsoon season from June to August due to heavy rainfall.
