Arwah Caves Overview

Arwah Cave is one of the most breathtaking and adventurous sites in Cherrapunji. The cave is also known as Sohra and is located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The cave is famous for its natural structures, fossils, and limestone formations which are believed to be millions of years old.

The natural bending and carving of the cave's formations make it easy for people to go through them. The stalactite and stalagmite formations are located in a particular area of the cave, and there is a millennia-old stream that flows inside the cave. To reach the Arwah Cave one has to trek for 15-20 minutes and it is quite a scenic trek that offers a view of waterfalls, lush greenscapes, and mountains. 

The Arwah Cave is not far from the city of Cherrapunji and has many attractions nearby like the Dainthlen Waterfall, Arwah-Lumshynna Cave Viewpoint, and NohKaLikai Falls.

How To Reach

Arwah Caves are located near Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Khlieh Shnong area of Cherrapunji. It is just 3.5 km from Cherrapunji Bus Station. It is a 15-20 minute trek from the parking lot of the Arwah Caves.

1. By Car: Drive from the Cherrapunji Bus Station to the Arwah Caves via Sohra-Shella Road. It is a 10 minute drive from the bus station. It is a convenient and flexible option.

2. By Cab/Taxi: Book a cab from your hotel or any starting point and tell the details. The location of Arwah Caves is easy and can be reached from anywhere in the city with ease.

Best Time To Visit

The Arwah Caves are open from morning 9 am to evening 5:30 pm. The entry fee to the caves is Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for children. However, it is advisable not to take very small kids to the caves, it is risky.

1. Best Season to Visit: To enjoy clear skies, pleasant weather, and better opportunities to explore the caves, visit Arwah Caves post-monsoon, that is from October to May.

2. Best Day of the Week: Weekends are usually busy and the place is filled with crowds. To enjoy the caves, the best days are weekdays with less crowds and more time to explore the caves.

3. Best Time of the Day: The visit will take approximately 2 hours to explore the caves, so the best time to visit the site is during the opening hours or early afternoon.

Other Essential Information

  • Carry a pocket torch/flashlight as the light inside the cave is not enough.
  • Wear comfortable footwear with good gripping. 
  • The caves are not suitable for small kids and elderly people.
  • Be mindful of the delicate cave formations and do not touch them.
