About the Destination:
The Entabeni Safari Conservancy located in Limpopo province gives the perfect venue for the event “The Big Five Marathon” which combines the experience of a challenging marathon with that of an African Safari holiday. Also known as ‘the Place of the Mountain’, this conservancy is set in the World Heritage “Waterberg Biosphere” and is a 22,000ha reserve in the Waterberg region.
Only a three hour’s drive away from Johannesburg, here accommodation ranges from tented camps to two five star luxurious lodges named Hanglip Mountain lodge and Kingfisher lodge, and some four star lodges. You can be assured of diverse scenery and a lot of game drives, sightings and enjoy international cuisine and a variety of activities.

Activities: You will experience the thrilling and authentic African safari comprising diverse wildlife-lions, large leopards special to the region, deer, rhinos and many more. The serene atmosphere of the conservancy and relatively few tourists make the experience truly unparallel. The daily game drive is included in the itinerary and will take place either in the morning or late afternoon, but you can purchase more of these as well as scenic helicopter rides. Then you have the exciting marathon experience which is followed by open roof partying into the starry night with great food, live entertainment and a big bonfire.

Entabeni Safari Conservancy
Today marks the first day of your big 5 Marathon Reach Johannesburg International Airport (also called OR Tambo) and avail any of the set timings 0830, 1000, 1200, 1400, and 1600 of departure from the airport to reach the Entabeni Safari Conservancy. If these timings do not fit your travel plans, you may request an individual transfer at extra cost.
Upon arrival in the conservancy, meet the tour guides and check-in into the camp. If you can avail of the departure from Johannesburg Airport times 0830, 1000, or 1200, it will be possible for you to go on your first exciting game drive here.
Game drives and bush walks at Entabeni
Explore the game reserve with an early morning or late afternoon game drive and a bush walk that are a part of the itinerary. Early morning game drives take place between 0600 and 0930. Returning from the game drive, you can munch on a delicious breakfast at the camp.
Afternoon game drive timings are from 1600 to about 1930, for you to witness a beautiful sunset which turns into a night safari where you can see nocturnal animals with the help of a spotlight.
With these game drives, you can also get an experience of the upcoming marathon as well!
Post breakfast, all the participants will be taken to the starting point of the marathon from their respective camps and lodges. A short briefing on the route inspection will be given before setting off for the starting line. All safari vehicles will go along the marathon route in a convoy, and participants can examine the running surfaces, water post locations and in general assess the difficulty of the route. A tempting buffet lunch will be on offer after the route inspection and here all participants will meet each other, face officials, rangers and medical staff for a formal introduction to the event and a presentation regarding the practical issues regarding the marathon. There will be no scheduled game drives on this day.
The Big Five Marathon Race Day
The participants will be taken from the lodges and camps to the starting line in time for the final preparations for the Big Five Marathon. The starting time is 0900AM, but delays may be expected due to the location of the big five game; there are no scheduled game drives this day.
Fun, Party, Food, Prize Giving Ceremony
A scheduled afternoon game drive will be available; additional game drives at other times can be purchased. The after marathon open air party in the evening will comprise of great food, live entertainment and a big bonfire and prize giving ceremony. There is no dress code and warm clothes are advised due to open air ambience.
Last Day in Entabeni
On this final day at Entabeni Safari Conservancy you can avail of one last game ride either in the morning hours or in the afternoon and a bush walk. Farewell dinners will be conducted in the evening in the respective lodges.
Tour Ends Here
It’s finally time to head back to Johannesburg and all participants will be driven back according to their departure times at the airport as follows 0800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, and 1800. As on arrival, it is possible to book your individual transfer to the airport at extra cost if these timings do not suit your travel plans.
