Overview

About the Activity:

While on Chadar Frozen River trek, navigate over the frozen river Zanskar up in the mountains of Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir. This encompasses a plethora of jaw-dropping sights alongside the gorgeous ravines and canyons of Ladakh that serves as the only means of communication between the hamlets of Zanskar Valley and Chilling.

Trekking in Chadar is laden with a bunch of unique experiences that include walking on the Zanskar frozen River which is literally a sheet of ice with glacial waters running underneath and camping out in inhospitable conditions inside caves. The journey of Zanskar Chadar trek takes one through beautiful sightings of hanging icicles, breathtaking iced-peaks set against turquoise skies and charming Tibetan prayer flags. In some areas, the ‘Chadar’ or ice sheet forms only on the corners of the Zanskar River that become narrow ledges through which trekkers cross by crawling under dangerous overhang rocks. At times, the Chadar even breaks right under one’s feet and floats away like a raft. The Chadar frozen river trek is open only during winter when the ice sheet is most stable.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrival in Leh

Your exciting Chadar Frozen River Trek commences. Reach Leh airport and be driven to the hotel. This day is reserved for acclimatisation and relaxation to ensure a healthy trip ahead. Tonight, you will sleep at the hotel.

  • Day 2 - Leh - Chilling - Tilat Do (3,200 m) (Drive/3-4 hours) (Trek/1 hour)

Indulge in an energising breakfast after which you enjoy a drive through charming landscapes. Along the way, take in the sights of Indus River and Zanskar River at their confluence at Nimoo. When at Nimoo, take the path along Zanskar and arrive at the road head at Tilat Do. At this place, go across the Zanskar. Based on the time at hand, you will pitch your tents on the other side of the water body or proceed further before camping. Tonight you will sleep in tents.

  • Day 3 - Tilat Do - Shingra (3,350m) (Trek/5-6 hours)

Today, rise and shine early and indulge in a steaming cup of tea at 7:00 AM. Charge up with a healthy breakfast and embark on the famous snow trek in Chadar that will be the practice for the remaining of the trek. This day, you will cover around 10-12kms based on the fitness levels of the people.

The main aim is to get to Shingra, but we have the option of camping early if the trail gets too demanding. Do note that this will be followed throughout the trek. We will be taking into account the physical capacity of the people. Retire for the night in tents.

  • Day 4 - hingra - Tilat Do (3,200m) - Leh (Trek/6-7 Hours) (Drive 3-4 Hours)

This is the final day of the snow trek in Chadar as you trace your step back to Tilat Do. Cross the frosty Zanskar one final time and hop on to the vehicles to be driven back to Leh. When at the destination, head to the hotel and get refreshed. Tonight, you will stay in a hotel.

Snow Trek in Chadar was the best trek ever. I had a really awesome time trekking in the snow clad mountains. The trek covers a lot of major peaks, and it is the best thing to do in Ladakh apart from of course, adventure sports. I so recommend this trek to all.

Ladakh is always a mesmerising place. No matter how many times I visit, this place just captivates me like never before. This place has its own magical charm and beauty. I do not know what I am attracted to. Be it the picturesque mountain peaks, or the azure lakes; the challenging trekking trails or the scenic valley; this trek is known for all of this. What an amazing trek to take.

I have taken this trek twice. Once in summer and once in winter! While I took this in the summers, the region was adorned in the most vibrant way possible. It was all filled with colour of the nature. It was so poignantly beautiful. When I took this trek in the October month, i.e., during the winter, the place was embraced with heavy and dense snowfalls. This actually that cuts off the entire region from the rest of the world.

This trek was actually very challenging as well as tricky treks in the world. If you are not a pro trekker, then do not opt for this. I wanted to do it for 5 years now, and now only I was confident enough to opt for it. amazing place and time. the weather was really rough. but an awesome trek to do.

The temperature Range of this trek goes as low as -25 to -35 degrees during the night in the winters. The trek can get a lot more tough for everyone. It is always better to be well equipped for the bizarre climatic conditions during the trek. Overall the trek is amazing and beautiful!

This place is nicely nestled deep within the snow-clad mountains. The enticing factor of this trek is the frozen river. This river entices thousands of travellers and trekkers from across the world. When I went on this trek, most of my co trekkers were from different corners of the world.

In my opinion, this trek is a bit overrated. This trek is all about usual trekking stuff. I don’t even know why it is known as a snow trek, when the snow is very minimal even in winters. I have taken better treks abroad and this is very basic and monotonous in comparison to those. But the climatic conditions are great. The only relief is that the trek is quite challenging!

The trek is quite tedious. Most of the times, a thick blanket of snow gets formed on the mountains, thus the name Chadar Trek. When this blanket formation happens, the one and only way to continue with the trek is to hike through the snowy rocks. One might have to cross boulders besides the river too. It is pretty tough and tedious trek overall.

This is one of the toughest treks I have ever been. While the word snow trek may seem fun, this trek can be very serious as the snow literally covers everywhere. Also, this trek is quite exhausting as the climate conditions are bizarre. I still loved this trek and I would recommend it to all avid trekkers out here. This is a trek that you should not miss.
