The chinese would greet their friends ” chaik ba buay?” which means have you eaten? and the malays would say “suda makan?” which means the same thing.
The Singapore chinatown is an ethnic enclave and home to the largest race here. The name chinatown was given by the british and is used by many non chinese singaporeans and tourists. However, to the local chinese it is known as “Niu Che Sui” or bullock cart water. In the malay form is it writen as “Kreta Ayer” Which means the same thing. During the 19th century, water supply along the chinatown area was basically transport via animal driven cart. In most cases cattles or bull driven. Hence the the name ” Niu Che Sui” or bullock cart water was derived. Ann xiang hill which is located alone south bridge in particular was know for having many wells which was the source of the water supply then.Today “Niu Che Sui” is a popular site with locals and tourists. Souvenir shops and restaurants line the streets where crowds of tourists are found throughout the day.
