If you are in Mumbai, then this is a must try. It takes less than a day, and it is worth it. Thanks and Kudos to the organizers for organizing this in a hassle free manner. People can actually do charity, and I feel even giving up our car travel for a day and pooling the cash that was saved for the fuel can be a great help. One must try taking this tour to know a lot on what’s wrong with the society and how impartial it is.

It was a fine tour. It was quite expensive, but otherwise we felt that it was a nice tour that made us know a lot about the people around these areas.

Overview

About the Activity:

  • Dharavi and Mahim in the heartland of Mumbai, comprises of Asia’s largest slum dwellings. While the very first thought of going on Mumbai slum tour might conjure images of poverty, unhygienic living standards, and a sizeable amount of unhappy faces, this Dharavi slum tour will offer you the better side of these areas and life around there.
  • Walking down the narrow alleys of India’s largest slum areas proves to be quite an adventure. Observe people from different parts of India live and make a living in absolute harmony.
  • The sense of community and pride in self-sustenance is evident through the innumerable small scale industries that thrive in the area.
  • Catch residents make papadoms, weaving baskets, embroidery, making soaps  and many more unbelievable professional deliverables that throw a pleasant surprise at every outsider.
  • Your Mumbai slum tour begins at the Mahim Railway Station. From here head straight to the plastic and metal recycling yard of 13th Compound.
  • Get abreast with the amazing small sized industry melting and moulding plastic toys and manufacturing buttons for popular brand Barbie Dolls of India.
  • Walk through narrow lanes and by-lanes taking in the wafting aromas from local bakeries and sweet shops. Exotic smells from soap and cosmetic making units are bound to make some heads turn.
  • Dime sized cyber cafes, locals brushing past, mass-producing tailor shops all make up for an exciting trip. Friendly locals and enthusiastic tiny tots waving from their roof tops and balconies simply add in a touch of regular life being lived here.
  • Continue on the show and tell tour listening to stories from your guide as you arrive at Kumbharvada, in Dharavi. Known to be the face of India’s largest slum dwelling, Dharavi is now iconic for its appearance in the Oscar winning Slum Dog Millionaire.
  • Visit Kumbharwada, an area occupied by traditional potters hailing from Gujarat. This large settlement set up in 1930s is a testimony of communal clay pits and kilns that have stood the test of time and witnessed hardships.
  • In tandem with Brazil’s Favela, Dharavi and Mahim will leave a mark in your hearts and minds.
  • After this stop, you’ll be dropped to your location. This Mumbai slum tour with Dhobi Ghat and dabba wala would be completed within 6+ hours.

People are really different, and their problems are way different from each other. This harsh truth was that I learnt from this slum tour.

Being in Mumbai, I have hardly visited this side of the city. Although, I frequently hear about people having a lot of problems here and stuff, I never visited until my girlfriend who works in an NGO put me on this tour. The moment I entered here I was taken aback. It suddenly felt like there were two different Mumbais in one.

This tour not only made me feel close to the people of Mumbai, but also let me know about the real state of the other side of the city. I really felt moved and sympathetic. I would like to take more such tours in various cities down the lane and see what I can do to help the needy people. Interacting with the people was a whole new experience all together. Kudos to the team for organizing this.

Good, but I would say it’s not for everyone. Only if you are a people’s person like me, you would like to get to know the lives of these people better and closer. It was a lot of information that I did not know.

Thanks to the well informed guides who helped us know the tiny industries and social structures better.

dunno whether to be wonder filled or disgusted that people can live in such derelict places… I was shocked and awed at the same time.

Crazy tour! Had never actually gone to these places to get to know the people and the industries. There is just so much that we don’t know. I had fun exploring the lesser known side of Mumbai.

If you are in Mumbai, this is worth a try. I wasn’t interested to do the usual stuffs as we have done that a lot, so we took, but we were glad to have taken this. It was all worth it. We even came to know about the charity options that actually reach the slum people for their betterment. Some of the people were even very friendly and they were opening about their problems. It was a good day spent with people who had real problems. Talking to them made us knew how much blessed we were and how much we were actually complaining about the first world problems.
