Overview

Marayoor can boast of being the only natural sandalwood forests in Kerala. Bordered by Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Anamudi Chola National Park, there are bright opportunities for you to spot leopards, deer, elephants and other Indian Wildlife Species.

Marayoor is pretty famous for primitive cave drawings and pre-historic burials. Even in the surrounding valleys and hills there are several burial gravestones. The girdle traces till Palani hills. The primeval rock refuge work of art originates in Marayoor and other forests are as old as 9000 BC.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - You reach Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary from Cochin, Coimbatore or Tirupur by afternoon. You have lunch at the site and will stay at a farm near the village. You stay in a hut made of bamboo, mud and grass. You start your trek in the Chinnar valley. You will trek through Chinnar valley rain forest which is 200 sq km large. You will also explore that part of sanctuary which is more prone to wildlife. Tribal guides from the Forest dept will accompany you. While trekking through the sanctuary you will come across wild gaur, spotted deer and many other mammals. The location of the hut also gives opportunities to spot good amount of wildlife. You will return back before dinner time. You will stay the night in the hut.
