Manchanabele is a small village located on the outskirts of Bangalore that is known for its picturesque dam and adjoining reservoir.

It is a mighty reservoir that is used to promote farming and irrigation in the nearby areas. From Bangalore Airport- 

The airport closest to Manchanabele Dam is the Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore. After landing in Bangalore, the easiest and most convenient way to reach the dam is by road. You can rent a car or hire a taxi from outside the terminal itself, which will take you to Manchanabele Dam which is located at a distance of 70km from the airport. A pleasant 2-and-a-half-hour drive through a convenient route shall bring you to Manchanabele Dam.

Best Time To Visit

If you are planning a visit, the best time to do so would be between October and March.

This is the time the area experiences its winter season. It is also the period right after the monsoon season, which means you can take advantage of the fresh foliage, the lake which is filled to the brim and the pleasant weather when you are visiting. 

Summer seasons are hot and sweltering and the lake is also not filled to capacity, which might not make your trip ideal.

Manchanabele Dam and its surrounding areas are replete with some striking flora and fauna which will be able to see on your visit there.

These are some of the more common species found in the area which can be easily spotted if you travel with binoculars.

Can we cook near the dam?

While there is no strict rule against cooking near the dam, it is recommended that you carry your own supply of cooked food with you if you are planning to go for a day trip in the vicinity of the dam.

There are also a few stalls selling cooked food, chips, snacks and tea very close to the periphery of the damn for the benefit of the visitors, and you are welcome to buy food from there as well if you are just driving through the area.

Can we visit the places for a picnic?

No, one cannot conduct a picnic in the Manchanabele Dam anymore. Earlier, it used to be a popular picnic spot, but after several deaths and accidents in the reservoir, it is now restricted.

You can only drive through the area or stop for a few hours to take in the view or go bird watching. However, there are many other small villages and scenic picnic spots in the vicinity that you can check out when you are there.

Can we swim in the waters of the dam?

No, swimming in the water of the dam and the reservoir are strictly prohibited. The water is very deep and there are boulders and rocks inside which are steep and slippery, which makes it very difficult to get a grip.

The waters of the dam are also unpredictable, with erratic bouts of suction and release making it very dangerous to swim in the dam. In Fact, several accidents occurred between 2006 and 2011 which led to the waters of the dam being closed off from the public.

Is there any camping place near the dam?

Yes, there are several camping places near the Manchanabele Dam. You can choose your camping tour from beforehand and sign up for various exciting activities around the dam such as kayaking, sightseeing the famous backwaters, bonfires, treks and much more.

You can set up camp as a solo traveller or enrol with a tour company that will take care of food, lodging, activities and travel for you.
