About Kashmir Great Lakes Trek:

Cuddled up cosily amidst the mountains, Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is yet another hidden jewel of Kashmir as it validates Kashmir’s mythical status as heaven on earth. The beautiful Alpine and snow-clad mountains will walk through the paths, and green meadows, and rocky terrains are there to bound the journey.

Every day is a 360° panorama of wild, rugged mountains, rolling meadows and turquoise alpine lakes and you get more than seven of these lakes and five very different valleys to explore! The Kashmir Great Lakes, however, is an IMAX 3D experience – such is the grandeur of the trek. If you have not done this trek, put it on your bucket list!

How to Reach:

By Air: Most major air carriers like Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Indigo operate daily flights to Srinagar. Reaching Srinagar by flight from New Delhi is the most convenient way.

By Train: Jammu railway station is well connected to all major cities in India by rail. Direct train services are available from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Trivandrum.

By Bus: Srinagar is linked by National Highway 1A to the rest of the country. J & K state road transport operates comfortable buses from Jammu.

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Srinagar | Transfer to Sonamarg
Upon arrival, reach the pick-up point, Tourist Reception Center on your own and get transferred to the campsite in Sonamarg for check-in. Enjoy self-exploring the city and visit places like Thajiwas Glacier and Baltal Valley. Later, return back to the campsite by yourself for an overnight stay.

Day 2
Trek from Sonamarg to Nichnai
Check-out and start a picturesque trek from Sonmarg to Nichnai via Shekdur. Take-in the picturesque views of the lush meadows and scenic landscapes. Arrive at the campsite in Nichnai and check-in for an overnight stay.

  • Begin trekking through the picturesque Sonmarg Valley, surrounded by lush greenery and snow-capped peaks.

Day 3
Trek from Nichnai to Vishansar Lake
Post check-out and start your scenic trek from Nichnai to Vishansar Lake, passing through picturesque Nichnai Pass and alpine meadows. Arrive at the campsite by Vishansar Lake and check-in for an overnight stay.

Trekking Distance: 12 km | Duration: 5 hours | Elevation: 12,172 ft.


  •  Begin the trek by crossing the Nichnai Pass with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.
  • Arrive at Vishansar Lake, a picturesque high-altitude lake surrounded by towering peaks.
  • Look at the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Kashmir Himalayas as you explore the surroundings.

Day 4
Trek from Vishansar Lake to Gadsar Lake
Check-out and start your trek from Vishansar Lake to Gadsar Lake. Trek towards Kishansar Peak, ascending 500ft above the campsite before continuing to the nearest campsite at Gadsar Pass. Complete the formalities for passing the Gardar Pass and check-in to your campsite for an overnight stay.

Trek from Gadsar Lake to Satsar Lake
After checking-out, start your trek from Gadsar Lake to Satsar Lake. Take-in the views of lush meadows, snow-capped peaks, and water bodies along the way. Upon arrival, head to the nearest base army camp for the required permits. Then, head to the campsite and check-in for an overnight stay.

Trekking Distance: 11 km | Duration: 5 hours | Elevation: 11,286 ft.


  • Descend from Gadsar Pass and take-in the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.
  • Pass through Satsar Pass, a high mountain pass with picturesque vistas of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
  • Explore the Satsar Lakes, a series of interconnected alpine lakes nestled amidst the mountains.

Trek from Satsar to Gangabal Lake
Post check-out, trek from Satsar Lake to Gangbar Lake, going through beautiful alpine landscapes. Look at lush meadows, rugged terrain, and crystal-clear streams along the way. Arrive at the campsite by Gangbar Lake and check-in for an overnight stay.

  • Trek through diverse landscapes, including alpine meadows, rocky terrain, and snow-capped peaks.
  • Ascend to Gangbal Pass, a high mountain pass and take-in the panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and valleys.
  • Arrive at Gangbal Lake, a pristine high-altitude lake surrounded by towering peaks.

Downhill Trek to Naranag | Transfer to Srinagar
After check-out, start your downhill trek from Gangabal Lake to Naranag. Upon arrival, get transferred to Srinagar, where your trek will come to an end.

Trekking Distance: 15 km | Duration: 6 hours | Elevation: 7,218 ft.


  • Pass by traditional shepherd settlements, where local shepherds graze their livestock in the high-altitude pastures.
  • Trek through dense forests of pine and fir trees.
  • Arrive at Narang Village, a quaint Himalayan village nestled amidst the mountains.
